Interesting plant. How do you think it would handle PNW conditions if planted out? It has done well in Scotland, but Seattle’s summers may not be as reliably moist.

Fine. It is fully hardy to zone 8.

ETA: Tasmania's climate is not that dissimilar to mine. And I am pretty certain we are a whole lot warmer in winter than Aberdeenshire Scotland!

Nice purchase. Is the foliage deciduous? Our neighbor has a tree that looks very similar. When leafed out it looks like a pine tree, but it drops all of it's needles.

I had hoped to make it out to the Heronswood sale, but life got in the way. I had to settle for a mail order item from Far Reaches. A Polygonatumx hybridium 'Striatum'. A variegated Solomon Seal.

Although I didn't plant many in previous gardens, these days I just can't get enough Muppet/Dr Seuss conifers! The pics online look really cool.

Chewy is not wild about traveling anymore. The old man is really feeling his age and prefers to spend 90% of his time on his dog bed. He is not even interested in going for short car rides....unless they involve a visit to a fast food drive thru!! Nothing wrong with his appetite!

A conifer near the southwest corner of the Heronswood house and about 4' tall or so may be this species also. Otherwise more about the species is here:

artinnature Have you tried acer1987 on ebay? I got a Dr. Seuss from them 2 years ago and several other nice JMs. They are the only ebay JM seller I have heard good enough reviews on to use.

I am interested in growing both conifers and JM in containers better than I do now. Any good advice, websites or places to see videos?

Thanks for asking :-) I am thinking this is not a very fast growing conifer. In 5 months it is not noticeably any larger, although there is some significant new feathering of the top most foliage.

I put a J. horizontalis that I rooted last season in the ground this spring. It grew very little, until about 2 weeks ago, then I noticed new shoots, on 2 terminal ends. They got to 1"L. but now it's already hardening off, but I expect good things to happen next season. ;-)

Yes, it has gotten bigger although not noticeably so unless you checked it often :-) Which I do, as I walk by it daily. It is about to be transported to my new garden next week.

You may have to wait a bit :-) Today is garden moving day and my efforts of organizing too many containers and other necessary garden accoutrements ready for my contractor buddy to load and haul have occupied the last couple of days. And I still have way too much indoor stuff to go through and purge and then pack before the official move on Saturday. My head hurts thinking about it.

I am thoroughly over this and will NOT be moving again until they take me out feet first!!

I thought you just moved out near the coast a couple of years ago.

No, I've been at my current place for the last 7 years and the one before that for 8. I'm a block up from the beach now but was on the beach (waterfront property) at the previous house and garden. One garden in heavily wooded, mostly shade and the other in full all day sun.

And it's not exactly the 'coast' either :-) Puget Sound, while a very large body of salt water, is a good 100 miles away from the Pacific coast. Because it is inland, it is more protected and has much milder weather than coastal areas do,

My new garden is 1/10 the size of the waterfront garden and a third or quarter the size of the current one. Downsizing, indoors and out!!
