It's very possible, maybe even likely, that your tree could survive, but it's a good question whether there is enough remaining root structure for it ever to have a strong foundation. You could probably prop/stake it up for the time being, but the bigger it gets, the more likely it will be to come crashing down. Sorry. In the meantime, whether for the sake of this tree or the next one, it looks like you're preparing to go to war with varmints! Are you certain that you have moles, or are you using the term loosely to indicate some type of burrowing pest? Moles did not do the damage to your roots, as they are carniverous only. They dig long tunnels and then patrol them waiting for bugs and worms to come crawling through. Gophers are vegetarians and may well be the culprits, or possibly voles that have taken up residence in an abandoned gopher or mole tunnel. Each requires a different extermination method because of their different lifestyle and diet. The sap and bark of Japanese Maples are extremely sweet, and once the little boogers have figured out what a banquet you're providing, they will continue to cause you trouble. A good garden center or your county ag/hort extension agent should be able to help if you need it. Good luck!

i see aged flowers rotting ... deadhead them when they are spent ... i see no other damage on the plant ... the lamium.. who cares ... i see one hole ... pinch out that leaf ... thoroughly search the SP .. and see if you can find a bug... if you cant ID what you are fighting.. then dont fight ... if you think.. you will live in some disney movie.. where everything is perfect.. all season long .... you will become very frustrated ... i see nothing here.. which requires anything but you to chill out... and enjoy natures bounty .. with all its imperfections .... thank God you asked.. before you nuked the yard ... ken

Hello everybody, I am also having the same problem with my ivy plant ("Ann ala" or H. pastuchovii is the name of the type), except I haven't found a single spider or any other kind of bug from it. The plant lived happily inside our house but about 2 weeks ago, the leaves started to look droopy and dry. I have watered the plant so the soil is moist all the time and it doesn't get that much direct sunlight. There's some single new, green leaves here and there but the big branches look very bad now. What should I do with this one? Should I try to get some cuttings from it and forget "the mother plant", or what would be a good option? I red that with ivies, it is also possible that the roots get rotten. If this is the case, is there a way to save the plant by going through all the roots and cutting the bad ones away? Should I then plant it to a new mold? Before I have never managed to keep any of the cuttings alive, so good tricks with the cuttings are more than welcome :) Thank you for all the answers in advance!
