Since your bedroom has a door, it is OK to have a change in direction in the flooring. The door provides a natural place to make the change.

Since you "hired some workers" to do this, it was your responsibility to make sure they knew what you wanted. Unfortunately, you didn't know that it was your responsibility.

If it is going to make you lose your mind (for real, not as a figure of speech), then you'll need to change it. And expect to pay for it again.

If it were me, I would just close the bedroom door.. After a year or two, if it still bothered me, I would save up to have it done again the way I wanted it -- and I would be sure that it was explained in writing to my contractor.

Ideally the floor boards should run perpendicular to the joists. You might not be able to tell unless the ceiling is open in the basement.

It seems to me that the hall changed direction because they didn't have to cut so many pieces.

I don't think it matters that the runs are different.

This happens all the time. It's appropriate.

Thank you all for your comments. I definitely should have gotten this clarified up front! I asked why it was done this way after the fact. The contractor offered to replace ithe wood in the other direction for the original price Im not sure if this is something that needs to be done? The other

bedroom off that hall is longest in the other direction which would be consistent with the hall and contrary to the direction of the rest if the house. I would appreciate some recommendations, Thank you kindly!

IMO it doesn't matter. I don't think anyone other than you will notice it. The wood is the same color in both rooms, which is the most important thing, and there is a door where the direction changes. As the other posters showed, in some instances people have the wood going in different directions room to room and there isn't a door separating the rooms. Very nice wood by the way.

Direction of wood is a concern in an older home where the subfloor is 1x across the joists and not modern construction with plywood or OSB sheets for subfloor. In a newer home, direction is personal preference and switching directions is fine. 

It probably won't bother anyone else nearly as much as it bugs you

If it bothers you that much, and the subfloor allows it, change the direction in the small hall to match rest of the house. The idea of running floor boards across the width of a very long very narrow room is to avoid a bowling alley feel, but that won’t happen in a short hall or a BR full of furniture, and it won’t affect your home value.
