Yes, another annoying orchid greenhorn asking for id's of NOIDS!
Comments (3)Evelyn, Please don't take those responses as being ticked off! The problem is that the 'big box' stores (walmart, home depot, lowes, etc) sell primarily hybrids of truly indistinguishable parentage. So there is almost no way ever to decipher what the plant is made from. We can guess at the general family that your plant is, but when you begin to understand how variable the children can be from a given parental cross, you will see that a real ID is next to impossible. Case in point- I have a ctsm that is just opening for me know. I bought it from a well known grower, with a name tag (I know what it is). These flowers have none of the coloration of the flower pictured that I purchased! I expected a pale pink with some cream or pale yellow and this flower is heavily deep red speckles! I mean not even close! Am I upset with the seller? Absolutely not! Because I have come to understand that you can't control genetics of seed grown plants, so every seed grown from that parental cross could be wildly different. I'm sure that the original picture represented the typical flower from that cross, but clearly not the flower of every plant of that cross! Now to continue my lecture ;) Most big box stores sell seed grown plants. But there are also meristem grown/cultured/produced plants. Meristem plants (aka cloned) is different. My understanding is that every single flower of a meristem produced plant should be exactly that of the parent because it really is a cloning. So my real point is that people can try to ID a known or suspected species or primary cross (species x species), but once you get deep into hybrid crossing you will never get an ID, other than the general family. That said, your flowers definitely have oncidium in them. The 2nd may also have some Miltonia? If you are looking for cultural advice, at least go for oncidium. And I love your 1st one! And fragrant too! You're lucky that you got to it before I did ;) You've posted here before, don't take the bark too seriously. Us ol' timers want to draw the newbies in, it's just that most white phals are... well, white phals. Carolyn...See MoreAsking my GW friends for prayers for a IRL friend....
Comments (35)I say prayers for everyone in that situation whenever I am reminded of them. Like I said, I was only at the blood center and the families and friends all touched my life. It was scary at times, especially when he had a fungal infection that was not responding to antibiotics. His flesh was coming off and they didn't know what it was until the culture came back. Once they got the right stuff treating it, everything turned around. That was the infection that delayed his transplant, but as I said, he is nearly ready to return home now and was able to drive out for the day on Thanksgiving. It was great. I wish I could be there in person so you could see and feel the hope. I'll send all I can by angel wings....See MoreA friend asked me what this is.
