BlueBerry Bloom Drying up

Just trying to figure out what this is? been like this the last two season but before that I had more BB fruits I can eat and shared with the birds, but lately half has been drying out and not developing into full fruits, not sure if it's some type of blight or just lack of Phosphorus, any ideas? I've even drip watered every 2 days from 4 to no success..1st photo is when fruit has develop but then starts to dry up

Hi there. I grow blueberries and have had the same issue. I can see if some of the flowers are producing fruit or if the entire plant is having the same issue? Also with more details i.e. watering, weather, blueberry type, amount of sun, I bet we can figure it out. In my scenario, I had multiple blueberry plants producing like crazy, except for one. I called my local ag office and discovered it was underground aphids. Blueberry roots are very sensitive to water PH, fertilizer, soil, you name it. I dug up some of the soil and sure enough. it was crawling with aphids. I have no clue if thats what’s going on with you but the advice below helped tremendously. I hope this helps. God Bless.

no aphids in mine (but just to make sure, I'll dig a couple of them up and add some canadian peat etc ..) but aphids really not a problem in my garden (I spray neem oil and Diamacious earth) since there's plenty of ladybugs in the garden, since I grow most of my BB in pots, I think it lacks the micro nutrients like potassium etc .. also I started using Seabird Guano and bought some azomite and I'll find out next season if this helps retain my BB fruits

did you happen to have taken some photos of the root with aphids, just for FYI?

Sulfur takes up to a year to react. So you had better not apply anymore until what you have applied has time to do it's thing. Too much can lower pH too far and cause toxicity of some micronutrients. I'd wait until they leaf out and see what they look like. You may need to apply a faster acting material until the sulfur kicks in. But be cautious about applying anything else that will lower pH. The plants don't have to look perfect right away. The sulfur should get you headed in the right direction.

The raised beds are 3ft X 3ft X 10in high with a mix of mostly peat moss with 2 1/2 bags (50lbs each) of Natures Way Resources Blue Berry Mix and little bit of pine bark mulch. Its also topped with 3in or so of pine bark mulch. I also added sulfer and cottonseed meal when mixing it all together. 2 of the potted plants have 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 soil conditioner (composted pine material), 1/3 pine bark. And one potted plant has all the same plus some perlite I had laying around that needed to be used. They all seem to enjoy there home for now. I have some burnt tips on the new growth on all the plants at one time or another. Not to sure whats its from either. Was thinking maybe lack of water or water quailty? Im using municiple city water acidified with sulfuric acid to ph5. I have noticed that some of the new tip growht that gets rubbed other branches from the wind will get this burnt look to it. Attached is a picture that was caused from rubbing against another branch untill grew past it. Some other ones though Im not to sure about.

I am in east Texas, about 3 hours from you. I have some Knockouts in several colors and cut them back severely in February - they get so big I have to do this. Just trim them back, water them, mulch them and they will most likely start showing you some new growth. These really are good roses for beginners.....I don't have any blackspot issues with mine. Other than the compost, was the soil good that you planted them in? Maybe the fertilizer you used might have burned them - watering will help leach it out. If leaves are a light green, possibly with the veins showing, get an iron product from Lowes [forget the name of it but think it might be Ironite] and mix in water and water it in. I have a few plants that do this and one watering with the iron is all it takes to green them up. Mulching will help - we haven't had any rain either - make sure you are getting the roots watered. Maybe leave a hose on them for 15-20 minutes going very slow. You might think you are watering well when the water is actually running off and not getting to the roots. I hand water a lot and I will water one group, then another and come back to the first group [and so on] to make sure there is adequate water getting to the root zone. If they are planted getting the hot west sun, it might be a little hot for newly planted roses. Just keep them watered and mulched. Good luck - you will get the hang of it. I am no expert but have grown [and killed] enough roses to have finally figured out what they like. Oh, and Home Depot usually has some good deals on mulch...... Judith

Hi everyone. Amyly Ann - Does the centre of your plant smell like a cross between a dead rat and a manure heap? If so this means your plant has rotted and this is why the centre just pulled out. I haven't had any experience of this problem with Guzmanias, but when it sometimes occurs with a Neoregelia, I just give the centre a good hose out and remove any other leaves that are lose and come away easily. I then allow it to dry thoroughly before dusting it with Flowers of Sulphur or a good quality fungicide powder (Make sure the fungicide powder doesn't contain any copper as this is often used in fungicides and can be fatal to brom's). You next have to try and find out why the plant rotted in the first place and it is usually caused by an organism called Phytophthera cinnamomi which thrives in oxygen deficient damp conditions often caused by the following: Over watering; standing the plant in a saucer of water; lack of good air circulation around the plant; or some sort of trauma which has damaged part of the plant leaving an open wound for the organism to enter. Knock the plant out of the pot and if the potting mix seems sodden with water, discard it completely, wash off the roots and allow to dry before re-potting in fresh potting mix. The original plant will probably slowly die, but as part of the life cycle it will usually produce one or two new pups in an attempt to assist in the "survival of the species". That's about all I can tell you, but perhaps some of our other members who are more conversant with Guzmanias can provide further information. Good luck and all the best, Nev.

Could it be due to a pollination problem? Some berries look good while others whither and die. Did you see many bees this year? My #1 pollinator here for BBs are Bumblebees and their cousins (mostly Carpenter Bees) that are in the BB bushes non-stop all day during blooming time.

That was another of my thesis, since weather here in CA has changed the last 2 season (hot cold hot cold in Jan, Feb March, I have seen a lot less bees than normal even this warmer days but what little bees showed up should have been enough for pollination so hopefully it's just lack of nutrients than bee's but won't know for sure until next season but for now, I will try to feed my plants azomite, compost, Seabird Guano and some alfalfa pellets, some elemental sulfur etc.. I love those Carpenter Bees, I see them year round in my garden alone with those pesky bluebirds that love my unnetted bb

It happens when the flower is not well pollinated or have some self incompability. Try adding another vaeiety that suits your variety and bees houses.
