RedTurtle - you got that right! I remember the first time I learned that lesson, about cutting WAY back. About 30 years ago, I had this nice plain green spider plant. Loved it. Well, as it aged, it got very brown edges, probably from fertilizer salts. Well, it looked awful, but I loved it and rather than toss it without any effort to revive it, I took sissors and chopped everything off at the soil line and gave it some new soil. Within a couple weeks, there were new leaves emerging from the soil. Within a year, it looked like a million bucks! It taught me to never fear whacking a plant clean back to the soil. Now and then, I lose one (probably because I waited too long to whack...), but usually, it comes back with a vengence. Cindy - I struggle with imperialis, too. I restarted it last year and it went south again this winter. So I whacked it back and am trying to start cuttings, which aren't looking too hot as yet. But I do see signs of new growth on the stump. I just don't get it, I guess... I'm with you - I want it to grow for me SO bad! Dang thing! Which may prove I'm NOT a veteran! Ok, I'll accept "honorary veteran" because I surely have to be one of those who have been TRYING to master these plants the longest. We see Norma on here now and then, and I know she's been growing a lot longer than me, though I'm not sure about Hoyas specifically. Are you out there Norma? Jim, so you think my biggest little washy has a fat trunk then, I'm quite pleased about that actually! Looks like I'm doing something right then. I checked that biggest leaf and it is divided a lot more than I originlly thought. It's my second go with the Adeniums, I can get them to germinate easily, but the last lot died off one by one, this years batch are doing better. Those SM's are a pain in the butt, they're in 3 inch pots and are themselves only 5 inches high, the pic makes them look bigger!!! Believe me, they're NOT. NPG, yes they are plumerias, have one 3yr old from a cutting, 4 1yr olds from seed and another 12 sprouting as I write. No I don't have any other Caudiciforms, as far as I know. Yes also to the Hoya question, its H.C. 'Krimson Queen' also from a cutting, has 5 more peduncles forming. It was given to me in '05, same as the plumie cutting. Yes again re the mango, mine is 'Kent' but I'm afraid its ailing somewhat. Suddenly started to have white mouldy patches on leaves, If I wipe it off it makes a translucent patch which then turns into a brown spreading mark and whole darned leaf falls off. Mildew?? Have treated it but its looking grim. Just after its started to push out lots of branches and new leaves too. Chad, if I'd have known how slow these SM things were I would never have bought the seeds in the first place, I will be in my box before it even resembles a palm tree at this rate....give me WR's any time. That's exactly what I thought from the beginning (that it was dehydrated) because the leaves we're not succulent at all. The soil was drenched so I thought maybe something was going on with the roots because they weren't taking the water up to the leaves. I'm going to spray with an insecticide/fungicide and see what happens. I knew it shouldn't look the way it does. i went to several Lowes in my area and none of them had any left only Carnosas.
