Container depth for seed starting 2" or 4"

One article says to use at least a 2" deep container to start seeds, others say 4" and so forth. I am anxious to get summer annuals in the garden as quick as possible! I know I can direct seed cosmos for example and I may do some, but under lights is more reliable I would think.

Thanks, Ginny zone 9b
