Looking for a fast growing vine to help with noise

5 years ago we moved into town near a fairly noisy street. There was a tree next door that pretty much blocked the noise from that street. That died about 3 years ago and the neighbors had it cut down.

We planted a yellow jasmine, a passion vine and something else in large planters to help with the visual and noise from the busy street. That worked for awhile, but they all seem to be root bound in their pots and are looking scraggely!

I'm looking for something that grows fast and tall to replace these. I do have some soil area below the deck, but it would have to grow something like 10 feet to even start to give us some sound help!

Any ideas?

You can buy a fairly large Bouganovilla that will make a pretty good barrier in a year or two. You could buy and grow as many as you need for the length you need

Bougainvillea do grow quickly, for sure. You just have to be careful of the nasty thorns.

I think the fastest growing vine we've had was a Cape Honeysuckle. Our Bower Vines grow fast and are really pretty, although maybe not as dense as the CH.

Uhm, Campsis radicans is another. Fast and aggressive(will literally cover your house because it climbs by rootlets) but beautiful flowers that are hummer magnets.

Many of the Reticulata hybrids are fast growers. "Linda Carol" (light pink)is real fast grower in my garden. Also, Non-Reticulata hybrids such as "Dolores Edwards" (pink) and "Honeymoon" (creamy white)grow extremly fast. The problem with many of the hybrids is that they don't have great foliage like the Japonicas.

Your probably bang on with the cedars however they will take a long time to fill in an area. They don't require a lot of work compared to a vine generally speaking. I certainly don't recommend vines to fill your need because the privacy they give would generally be subject to the season. Below are some comments on the ones I have experience with. Most of the summer one of my chain link fences gets covered in Clematis Tangutica. I think it was called Clematis Bill MacKenzie. Its an amazing mess of yellow flowers. The nice thing with Bill MacKenzie was how fast it fills in during the spring over my other vines. I do have other clematis but nothing as bushy and filling as Bill MacKenzie. You could also look at Virginia Creeper but be careful as it can get out of control very fast. The neighbor behind our house has his crawling over his back fence snaking through the back lane and strangling parts of my garden. If you don't mind planting annuals every year you could try morning glories depending on the size / height of the area you want to cover. I've had good experience with morning glories all over my limited space. I'd seriously consider a long term investment though like cedars or some other type of bush. Evergreens for your area will give you all season privacy. Or if winter privacy isn't a big deal consider an edible bush like saskatoons. Well my 2 cents.

Sunlight Gardens, a mail-order nursery with a very good selection of regional natives, especially recommends the Dutchman's Pipe or Pipevine (Aristolochia macrophylla) for "screening" uses in a shady location. This vine will grow in sun or shade although probably not really deep shade. Not evergreen; however, the large, 6 to 12 inch, heart-shaped leaves, will effectively cover a fence or trellis during the growing season. The plant is named for the shape of the flowers. More description: "Dutchmans Pipe is a common vine in moist southern Appalachian hardwood forests in coves and along stream banks easily twining 20 to 30 feet high. It has been popular as a porch screen for ages because it is fast growing, has large heart shaped leaves, and has odd little flowers. The two inch pale brownish purple flowers are pipe shaped or s-shaped with a widely flaring triangular "mouth" perfect for catching careless flies. The curious looking early summer flowers are borne sparsely among the wide leaves. Try it on a trellis for screening or let it ramble among shrubs and trees. It likes good moist soil and can take either shade or sun." I forgot about Tecomaria capensis! That grows really well in my yard and will take heavy pruning to keep it in shape. It's not really a vine, but is dense and make a great boarder in a year or two.

I think the cape honeysuckle would work. I have several of them, but I cut back to 3 feet twice a year. I think a slo-motion camera could catch them growing ;). I have seen them up to 20x25 feet.

They can be frost tender and will show it below 30, but leaves fall off, trim them back and it will come back with a vengeance.

Hummers and the little Tit bush birds love it also. I think the Tit bush birds must be eating tiny insects but I've never seen anything.

I think I'm going to pull the plants in pots on the deck and replant with something fast growing, and also plant something in the ground below, so it will have time to catch up with the upper plants (if that makes sense)

If you haven't already decided/ planted any thing yet, when I moved into my home I had the same issue as you with noise. I planted Evergreen Wisteria and Cape honeysuckle and now hear very little noise from an interstate nearby. The wisteria grew about 2 feet wide and 5 feet tall the FIRST year the cape honey suckle about double. they covered the entire 20 foot long chain link fence in about 3 years. i did fertilize heavily the first 2 years also. hope this helps!

Last year i planted a thunbergia vine in June,within a few months it covered most of the fence that i'm growing it on.I'm growihg it to hide the side yard from the street.This year it has covered the fence totally,very well,and it keeps growing,also is very pretty as i have the multi colores one.Yellow,orange,pink and white.
