SAE 10w40 oil for Cub cadet

They recommend the Kawasaki SAE 10w40 synthetic and I usually just buy it on amazon. However I decided to service my rider this weekend and Amazon can't get it here that fast and plus for some reason it seems to have gone up to like $14 a quart. Is there something I can buy locally that will do as well it's an sae 10w40 synthetic blend... Or just stick with the Kawasaki and wait a week

A general comment from my experience. When a company recommends a specific brand of a product there are usually more to it than function. Many times a company will purchase a bulk product and package it as their own brand, So there is NO difference between the company band and any of the other that purchase the same bulk product to label as their own.

I saw it in the grocery store that I worked, and the chemical company, and the drug companies that I have worked for. For the manufacture of the bulk material this works nicely with the marketing practice of product differentiation. ie being able to sell your product at all of the points on the price volume curve.

I would compare the MSDS sheets for several brands of oil that are available and marketed as SAE 10w40 synthetic oil, and use the one with the best price.

For reference SAE is a set of standards, and to be labeled SAE the product must comply with there standards of that type of product. https://www.sae.org/

Just stop at any local auto supply or Wal-Mart & pick up a bottle of their premium grade syn 10w-40 . Nothing special about Kawasaki oil . Just base oil with a Dealer Mark up !

It really doesn't take much gasket loss between the cylinder and oil galley to build pressure. I had a Courage twin that even after adjusting oil level and servicing the breather I kept going and did gaskets that showed nothing definitive to correct a smoke issue. there was a bulletin on these breathers. The breather on a Courage is different though. The only bulletin I've seen on Command twins were some gasket changes and some early special policy type things. I'm confused about what you found in the valve cover though if it wasn't the reeds. Was there carbon build in either of the cylinders? On the parts list, add the breather cover kit, the dip stick seals plus change the oil (10w30 or SAE 30 if + 50 degrees) and Kohler oil filter. You also want to be sure this thing can breath well through the air filter and that there is not an exhaust restriction- like from a custom deal or broken muffler baffle etc.

Most of the air cool manufacture do these days say to use 10W30, the oil they sell with their name on it is just that. Many of us old timers still prefer straight 30w for mowers because they generally are warm to hot weather use engines. Under extreme conditions or when oil isn't changed as often as it should be, multi-viscosity oil can break down and become its base stock rating which is the low number. Improvements may have been made so this doesn't happen like it used to be but us old farts just feel better about using straight 30w. obviously, air cooled engines used on snow blowers or other cold temp machines NEED something like 5w or 10w30. The engines owners manual will give a temperature scale as to what grades of oil are acceptable for the temperature the maching is being used for. There will be a cross over from one to the next. Straight 30W is generally considered acceptable at something like 40 or 45 degress and above. How many of us mow our lawns below that? Some may, some may use their mowers to collect leaves in the fall when temps dip. Odds are you also will find your oil changes call for twice per year by the hours you use the mower. So just run straight 30w in the summer and multi's in the winter. Not so hard to do.

Where we hunt Deer there's a six foot wide path that's probably 1/4 mile long. This path grows all year after Deer season untill the fellows start using it for getting to the woods in Archery season. Me and my one son have been cutting it every year for a long time and I'm now using my 3rd tractor on it . Along time ago I had a 12 HP that had a rough time getting through it with the deck raised, Sometimes it stalled out. About 8 years later I had a 18 HP that did a little better but it worked pretty hard for me to get it cut down. Now I have a GT5000 with a 25 HP that goes through it like butter. I do agree that you don't need that much horse power for mowing grass but with this tractor I can pull a big steel wagon loaded with billits of wood and cut this path without putting a strain on my tractor. For me I like the extra horse power but if I was only mowing grass I wouldn't need more than a 10 or 12 HP. I think Tim the Tool man taylor started it all when he kept saying (MORE POWER ) ! Pap

"Star: Seafoam or any Oil Conditioner Cleaner will not harm your engine if used in moderation . Even small amount of transmission fluid will clean up valve carbon issues or sticking rings. Normally only req'd on older engines" SeaFoam is a good cleaner for old engines that have been neglected, but so is plain naphtha. If you desire to spend your money on overpriced chemical cleaners, then have at it. If you use a good quality synthetic in the engine and change it on a regular basis then you donÂt have to worry about using an engine cleaner. Using SeaFoam in the oil for "normal" use is foolish. Walmart shelves are burdened with many oil additives and all of them are snakeoil.

The 10w-40 synthetic blend will be fine. Get some of the factory stuff and use it next time. There can be a difference in oil that is graded for air-cooled service and oil that is graded for auto/water-cooled service.
