Are milkweeds typically short-lived?

mxk3 z5b_MI
last year

Doing some cleanup today and the swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) had a few measly roots attached to the dead branches. No rootball to speak of. This clump is at least 4 years old, maybe 5, and was really big at one point. So wondering if it's just at the end of its lifecycle or whether conditions ultimately weren't to its liking. I haven't checked my other (previously) big clumps yet.
