Design Dilemma Exterior Remodeling

Exterior Remodel advice

Hello All,

Looking at doing an exterior remodel. I’ve attached some photos and a sketch up that I had done to see what your thoughts would be. If you think it goes together or any changes you may have.

The plan is to update the siding, stone around the bay window, other windows, doors, add a front porch and re-do the concrete. We would also be doing a detached garage in the back. But we’d tie that into whatever style/colours we choose for the house.

Originally we were thinking black accents/trim to go with the red. And then charcoal or dark grey for the siding. And possibly a lighter gray around the bay window.

While I like your rendering, the roof pitch on the main level does not seem accurate with the roof pitch of the house. Furthermore, it does not look like you have any pitch on your porch roof and I'm pretty sure you need at least a minimum pitch to handle rain and/or snow. It's not clear if you will be able to achieve that with your current roof pitch and the clearance you will need at the front of the porch to walk under.

So we’d probably raise the roof to be higher or match the top of the front door threshold. The rendering isn’t 100% accurate.

But the front porch itself wouldn’t be exactly flat. It would have a slight angle that would then drop down into a hidden gutter where the front porch meets the slope of the actual house.

The drawings were more or less inspiration, a way to show where we were thinking of heading. Just wasn’t sure what opinions would be on the look and what colours people would suggest.

It's a beautiful home as is. To add more color, paint the front door. If it's in your budget, changing out the standing seam metal roofs over the garage and lower front window to a darker color could really showcase that part of your home and enhance the visual lines. If you end up replacing the shingle roof, choose a darker color for that, as well. However, this roof looks fairly new. And yes, change out the light fixtures!

My main thought is to paint the garage door a dark, complementary color. Right now it sticks out like a sore thumb and dominates the facade.

Does the brick have gray in it? I think you can do a darker roof and take a color cue from that. I would remove some of theyews and add other flowering bushes and add a row of low growing plants for more texture and color. I like the iron posts and would not chnage them other than to coordinate the color.
