Thanks -- The handheld shower is Delta but the thermostatic trim is Brizo. I can't tell what the above head rain shower is but assume it's one of the two!

I think you have two options:

1. The right way: Open the wall to get at the supply line from the valve so it can be rerouted to a position on the wall and mount a regular shower head there. If you can do this from the back side of the wall it will save big headaches because you won't have to tear out tile and mess up the waterproofing. You will also probably want to remove the rain shower head and patch the hole.

2. The cheapo way: Remove the rain shower head; get a handheld that mounts on a sliding bar and attach the end of the hose to the rain shower outlet. This will look weird, but is a way to do it if option 1 isn't a possibility.

Obviously option one is easy if there is an interior wall behind the plumbing…

Oh, yes it's a linen closet on other side of the shower system so that could make it easier! Assume someone would still have to go through the tile though? Is a plumber the right person to speak to about this project or someone else?

A tile guy would probably be a better choice to drill a hole in tile. Plumbers are not known for their finesse.

There's an even cheaper option 3: Leave the rain shower and the handheld outlet in place. Mount a second shower wand holder at the height you would want a regular shower head to be. That can be done for the cost of the shower wand mount, $40, and a $5 tile drill bit. If your wand has poor flow, replace it with a higher flow wand head.

More seriously though, why get rid of the rain shower head? Why not leave it in place for the occassional use by someone who likes a rain shower? But install a new wand that runs on a sliding bar. Open the walll from the closet side and install any necessary bracing, so your sliding bar can be screwed into wall studs or cross braces. That allows it to double as a grab bar, a useful safety feature for older people.
