grad gifts?
Comments (17)Hi everyone, I really appreciate all the advice. This week has been crazy busy and I just haven't had time to reply. My oldest DD (the one with the friend who has cancer) has been organizing a fundraising book and bake sale to raise money for cancer research. Although she and another friend have done most of it themselves, the families have also been put to work. We spent 6 hours on Sunday just organizing books into categories and we are no where near finished. I would normally give money or a gift card, but this girl and her family are extremely well off and I know she will lack for nothing (also an only child). She's also won enough scholarship money to keep her going to school until she's thirty. I think I do want something that she will look at and remember or at least receive and know I was thinking of her. I see her everyday so I think I will scope out what sort of jewelry she favours and go from there. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm off to bake 3 dozen cookies before school starts....See MoreHelp requested again - law school grad. gift for son's girlfriend
Comments (22)Thank you again everyone - this gives me even more to work on. As for the jewelry - I think it's so interesting that a circle pin was mentioned twice - I was given one when I graduated and I still have it. She'll be wearing lots of suits and a simple, classic pin just might work well. Maybe a circle pin with tiny pearls or even a stick pin. I had thought of a Waterford paperweight - they have a star one and I could have it engraved and include a note saying something about 'a rising young star in the legal profession' - and since she's graduating at the top of her class I wouldn't be exaggerating. If I give her a silver frame I could even print one of the photos they've sent me of the two of them and place that inside. I hadn't thought of the school's gift shop - I can check out their web site or phone them. And that's a good idea too about the cookbook and the tea set. I'll have to ask my son if she drinks tea - but what makes this idea interesting is that a year ago she couldn't cook. Her idea of a meal was scrambled eggs and grilled cheese. My son has worked in restaurants and he's always making meals for his friends and now she's learning her way around the kitchen too. Thanks again everyone - I feel much better about a gift now. I'm going to write down these ideas and put them in the box with all of my greeting cards. That way I can refer to it the next time I find myself worrying about a gift....See MoreGreat Graduation Gifts for Young Women
Comments (13)That's a sweet keepsake, Justretired, but as I said I've done lots for her as a new mother. I have not marked her graduation from college. It is important to me that in addition to all that i/we have done for her as a new mother (and new adult, for that matter), that I mark her personal achievements in graduating college (and in fact, finishing early). Fun2B, I may end up taking her shopping but I will also try to think of a keepsake as well. I remember only a few gifts when I graduated -- but then I was going right on to grad school so most of the gifts were money. I did check with my sister, thanks for noting that a commitment often comes with logo gifts, Allison! Sister told me a note was perfect and there was no need to gift her-- "but in case you don't listen to me, she has x, y and z" lol Still working on gift ideas for the other grad-- but that will be relatively easy when I can focus. Thank you all for your ideas and thoughts!...See MoreCar loan for recent college grad vs paying cash?
Comments (25)I'm out of the shadows again on this one. 600 is not that great considering sub prime lending can start at 650. But at her age, she is just building experience on her file. The FICO algorithm models for the likelihood of delinquency within 24 months, so the factors going into that calculation correspond with the model value. The only way to improve credit score is to have credit activity. And installment credit is considered more favorable than revolving credit. Also impacting interest rates and loan approval is the ability to pay. Permanent employment is less risky than sub work, so you get a more risky loan for a higher rate. That only changes when you have a consigner who reduces the risk. My first solo car loan came with a 10% rate in the early 90's. Living debt free is great. However few people can afford a home with cash, at least where I live. Establishing credit with 7% interest on a $5,000 auto loan makes a lot more sense when you decide to buy a home with a 30 year amortized loan at a less favorable rate based on your lower credit score. Finally, there are several industry modifiers available with FICO, auto being one. So the version of your score the dealer pulls is different than the one you receive when you go online. And many lenders will have custom models that may, or may not, act as an overlay to FICO. They model for a number of factors including delinquency, bankruptcy and retention. FICO is to credit modeling as Kleenex is to tissue. Although I know the deal is done, I thought this might add some clarification for others.....Just some additional information for consideration from experience....See Morejojoco
