Looking for ideas to de1970s my exterior - we’re doing an addition and exterior remodel and looking for ideas on how to incorporate an overhang over the front steps to add some curb appeal. We’re struggling with what to do about the front door being off center and the recessed area around it. The part that really can’t change easily is the size and location of the concrete step at the top as it’s tied into the foundation. We’re going to be changing the bay window to a bump out with a shed style roof.

One idea is a shed style roof, the other is a gable like this (don’t have a drawing of the shed style yet

Your front door doesn't need to be centered in your front porch. Remove the bushes from and dig out the ground left of the sidewalk, tossing the dirt over to the right side. Build your front porch the same width as the cantilevered two story part of the home and at least eight feet deep with a forward facing gable roof with its point between the two windows. Use thick sturdy posts.

I think shrubs should be cut back or replaced with shorter plantings so that the front of the house is visible. Then consider reworking the porch. The decorative piece in the center of the gable looks distracting to me. Is there a walkway to the entry?

Looks like you have some possible rot in the roof, some how much work/change aree you looking for? The most obvious points are: 1) you probably need railing for code. In my neighborhood, the old Victorians tend to have similar railings. So, check out your neighborhood for an appropriate style, check out your local historical society for a possible pic. 2) If you moved the stairs to near the doors and made a path around, you'd be able to use the porch,because it doesn't look like you have room for chairs, if you need to walk to the end of the porch to the door. I'd leave plenty of space for a flower bed or some shrubs between the new path and the new door. (I recommend broadleaved evergreens, like Mt Laurel, rhodos and azaleas. You can probably get a mix of leaf sizes nd bloom times) Of course, if you move the stairs,it helps to have another entry close to the garage/driveway for when it is sleeting and you really don't want the extra distance to your porch covering. That said, our driveway and garage are not that close to any of our house doors. We just keep an umbrella in the car.

With the gable style we think the long run of horizontalsiding looks a bit boring and like more how it is now (we are wanting to do shake siding around bay window portion with horizontal over the garage doors

It's a bow window, a bay window is squared off.

The gable style in the second photo looks good.

If the third garage is for a big SUV or pickup, check the proposed door opening clearance for height.

I'm glad you are updating the bay(bow), but I don't like the clipped gable end. It is a interesting detail that makes your home more modern. I would not complicate the roof with another gable. It just emphasizes the three car garage.

I think the stone gable portico is heavy and too traditional. How about a shed roof portico? Or a flat roof with a minimal pitch? With a modern door it will add presence to the entry.

Can you remove the stone between the original two garages and make them one? I would put an arbor over them at any rate to break up the three garages.

Yes the 3rd stall is to allow for a larger vehicle and will be dug down a foot below the existing garage that only has 6.5’ doors - not sure if the post in between is structural or not but can confirm.
