Annual mandevilla growing on front columns

I was inspired by the photo on the left of the Alice du Pont Mandevilla. The other picture is my front entrance (picture from last year). Could I use my urns and columns to get a similar look? How would I support the mandevilla without damaging my wood?

look close at your first pic.. they used wire ... or maybe a string ... to trap the plant against the column ...

it would take a very expert.. well experienced hand to do this with roses ...

if you want to try.. go with some faster growing annual ... so you can learn all about training plants vertically ... and then.. when you know all there is to know.. then go with the slower growing roses ... btw... do yo know how to grow roses in pots.. you could grow those out back for a year or two.. while you learn the other part out front ...

you will have to be out there at least once a week to keep training it ... dont think this is a plant it and come back in september thing ...

ps: and btw ... you might be better off planting long term perennials.. like roses.. in other earth ... and then training them out the posts ... rather than messing with pots ... you would have to repot them every other year or two.. and to do that.. tear them down off the cols.. etc ...

Mandevilla would work great there, it’s such an easy keeper. I have a pot next to my patio column that I grow it on.

I use very thin wire, almost invisible, spaced out as the vine grows upwards. And they grow fast. The wire isn’t for it to grab onto, just to keep it from falling over. So you’ll just add wire/string/fishing line/whatever to it as it grows.

In other words — when you first plant it, hold it up to full height and tie it (not too tight). It’ll start going up, and when it gets taller and starts to flop, tie it again. And so on.

That’s how I’ve always done it, anyway, and it works well.

I’m sure you’re aware of this already, but the mandevilla I buy always comes wrapped around a bamboo arch or other little ”trellis”. Just carefully cut it away and unwind the plant from it before planting.

The container size question is an easy one. You can grow very small plants in very large pots using very fast soil with little difficulty. As soil drainage/aeration decreases, the pot size should decrease as well. Reason: Roots are in constant flux. They die & regenerate at a rate you might not believe. In saturated soil they begin to die very quickly. Ideally, a soil/plant combination should need water every day. Since most of us are not willing to water every day, we strike a compromise & use a soil that holds water longer. These soils do kill roots. The longer the soil is saturated, the larger the size of the roots are that are killed. When soil conditions improve & air is allowed back into the root zone, roots begin to regenerate. This process of root death and regeneration slows plant growth and development and is an energy drain on the plant. So, if you want to use a big pot, use a fast soil - otherwise, start in a container that is small enough to need water every other day at first & move up in size as root conditions and/or water needs dictate. Hamp, no I've never over-wintered it, I grow Mandevilla in the ground as an annual. It's worth it, such a great plant, and easy to grow. You had mentioned that you've enjoyed your 'Valentine' rose on another of my threads. Well, I was out watering one of my 'Valentine' roses this morning with a hose and while I was standing underneath my Shantung Maple tree with the hose, I noticed something just above my head, dangling from the low tree branch. Take a look at what it was! I just went out to check on it and it's still there. So, it's been there all day. Earlier this afternoon, I saw it stretching and moving to another branch. And it's not even Halloween yet :-) Randy My newest pet, which is still "hanging around" my front yard, dangling from my Shantung Maple tree like an ornament. He's very interesting, but the thought of receiving a series of rabies shots has me rethinking how close I got to him. I hope he doesn't return from his nighttime activities tonight. I know he's a beneficial for the garden, but also a bit creepy to have near the entrance to your home:

Can finally reply to the original question :) Just brought our Mandevilla plants out from the crawlspace. 2 of them were the ones Lynnencfan mentioned above (3 years ago- wow!), and the 3rd one was from a tip cutting I took in Nov, 2008 before we stored them for the winter. The cutting in question was from new green growth, and about 8" long. I rooted it in water for about 2 months, then potted it up (4" pot) and kept it in a South window during the winter. Last spring, it got repotted into a 10" pot with a 3' tomato cage for support. The vine itself probably grew about 10 total feet, but I kept it wrapped around the cage. Did not flower last year. I didn't cut that one back but put pot and cage under the house for storage. Just brought it back out this morning, and there's an abundance of nodes just waiting to pop out with new growth! So yes, they can be propagated from cuttings. Hopefully, we'll get some blooms this year. I'll report back in this thread again on the plants' status this summer. In the meantime, we also had 2 viable seedpods from the older Mandevilla last fall,and I'm getting ready to pull the seeds and sew them today. Will also report back on their status later in the season.

Glad I found this thread. My mom just asked me today to ask about mandevillas as she has one potted outside; she wondered how far back she could prune it before bringing it inside. She's never pruned it before bringing it in and noted it took so long for it to bounce back each year. Now I see by westview's post that this is apparently just the way it is and she'll have to put up with it if she wants this particular mandevilla! She has brought it in every year for around 3 years now and it goes in the basement in front of sliding glass doors (with all of her other brought-in plants) so it gets light but no direct sunlight. She says hers has bloomed down in the basement as well, but it has always been slow to bounce back when it goes back outside in the spring.

OP is asking about Mandevilla, not roses. Mandevilla is a fast growing tender perennial, not an annual. If you live somewhere with cold winters you should be able to over winter the plants indoors. To grow it up those columns it would need a few strings or wires since it climbs by twining. It doesn’t need to be ’trapped’. It’ll climb by itself. It would not damage the wood other than perhaps causing some easily removed grubby marks from wet leaves flapping against the paintwork. Yes, Madevilla grows quickly, blooms profusely where I live, i use plant tape ( stretchy) on mine. They are perrenials but quit flowering in the late fall ( So Cal ) for me. i just trim them-back some at that point.
