Comments (12)DE should NOT be inhaled! You can eat the darned stuff (and believe me, we ALL eat it) but can't inhale it! Food grade or horticultural grade DE is largely Amorphous silica, which has less of in inhalation danger than the pool filter grade, which is almost all crystalline silica. Your horticultural DE can be used with perfect safety, as long as you wear a dust mask. Are you worried about the warning on the label? Most of that stuff under your kitchen sink has warning labeling, yet we use them with abandon! Have you read the warnings on a bottle of bleach or any household cleaner? EEEEK! Give me DE any day! BTW, contrary to common belief, DE does not lose its effectiveness if it gets wet. It can even be mixed with water and applied as a spray (it doesn't dissolve so frequent agitation will be required)....See Moreso much for my objectivity...there's a sick goldfinch in my house
Comments (8)OH NO, please go over to the birdwatching forum and read my post about the flufed up birds. What you have there is salmenilla. I had two that I cought and brough in two days ago. They rooseted together through the night, then died the next day. You must take all your feeders down and wash them with a bleach solution. You know the drill I am sure. Clean under the feeders and any bird baths too. There has been a outbreak in our reigon. It is highly contageous and can be transmited to humans and domestic pets. There are several good links in the post over there. This is NOT one of those things that you want to let nature take it's course with. This affects birds in the finch family the most, including pine siskins. I know how badly you felt, I go through the same dilema myself and it was so sad to watch those little birdies die, I was going to take them to the rehabber to be put to sleep, there is nothing to cure it, I am glad they had each other in a warm place to die. So WARNING to anybody in this region, pleas please keep your feeders EXTRA CLEAN especially UNDER them , this is spread by fecies. I am so sorry dirtgirl. Comments (7)Thank you all for your replies. My biggest problem is that I didnt't spend enough time planning for my retirement, actually, I really didn't spend any time planning for it and that was a big mistake. I did get my car repaired two weeks ago and it cost me over $1,800, which I had to put on my credit card that was all paid off. The car runs so much better and one of the things included in that $1,800 was 4 new tires, so now I feel a little safer in it too. I did apply for Social Security benefits last August and my first SS check is due Nov. 12. That will help a lot. I am still working my regular job and will for a while longer. I have good insurance at my job and since I work for a university that has a good medical facility, I can take advantage of that while I am still working. I did talk to a financial planner a little over a year ago. His advice was all based on my selling a piece of property that I own in another state and that is where a lot of the problems originate. The property has turned out to be not as saleable as everyone always thought. The sale of that property, 9 acres, was what I was depending on for my retirement. It is vacant land that has some wetland and due to houses being built on all sides of it and that property being built up, mine is now mostly wetland, but I am still trying to sell it and have taken steps to have some preliminary engineering done on it. I am trying to get things in my much too cluttered house in order. I never married and have no children or close relatives. I am basically alone except for an older sister on the west coast who is worse off than me and an older brother in Michigan who is in poor health and not quite himself anymore. I am trying to take control of my life and my situation. It is not what I had thought it would be, but I have to try to make the best that I can of the situation I find myself in now. Comments (23)I am in the middle of it too. I couldn't figure out why there was so much dust one day when I came home from work. Lots of dust and some wood splinters in my laundry room. The contractor cleaned up really well after my demo. I couldn't figure it out. It finally hit me today (sorry, boyfriend's parents are here from Florida, boyfriend is nuts, work is insane, and my house which is my sanctuary is torn up, just restarted working out at the gym to deal with the stress as there is not enough chocolate in the world!--so it took me 36 hours) It was the plumber who went through the attic crawl space in my laundry room to install the gas line for my new dual fuel range. I have been breathing insulation dust! No wonder my throat feels tickly. I figured it was from the 50 plus mile per hour winds we were having that is blowing everything in site therefore we have extremely bad air quality too boot! Ugh! Please, please, please tell me today is Friday and I have a three day weekend ahead of me and only have to deal with an upside down house, crazy boyfriend, his parents, plumbers coming to fix leaky valves in my laundry room and a toilet that doesn't work right and at least I don't have to deal with the insanity at work as well! Just another 24 hours till the weekend....... Everyone--I feel your pain! Especially in my throat and lungs at the moment....See MoreBeverlyFLADeziner
