Family table-round or rectangle?
Comments (28)The round table does sound nice to seat 8 if there is enough clearance on all sides, plus I would asume the OP will also have need to put a high chair in the room. We have a rectangular table that seats 6 on a regular basis, though it has a butterfly leaf that when it comes out will seat 8 in a large square similar to pattieem's table. We have used it for parties and when my BIL's family came to stay with us for a few weeks over Christmas. Similar to the round table, I also like how it faciliates conversation. As I had only 6 chairs, I ended up using a bench ottoman I already had for one of the sides. That ended up being the most popular place to sit with the younger kids; but I know it would definitely depend on the chemistry between the children whether or not a bench seat would work or not. One thing I find annoying about my setup is that my kids seldom push in their chairs and I have to go around pushing them in all the time. That would be one advantage of the farm table and bench seating. I usually don't share personal pics, but here are a couple of pics of all the kids over Christmas when we had the leaf out: All eating: Making Xmas goodies:...See MoreWhat size tablecloth (70" round) and other dining room questions
Comments (16)The one thing that I would change, if possible, are the solid doors in the upper middle of the cabinet. Is there any way you could have them changed to glass? I think they distract from the display of your lovely pieces, as the doors are the dominant things, to my eye. It would then give you more room to create a pleasing arrangement, with more variety, while still showing some of your place settings and stemware. It may be fairly inexpensive to have glass added to the existing door frames. If that's not possible, then I think you can display some of your glasses, some of your china, but remove most of them and add other things with more color/texture/interest. You might think about adding mirror to the back of the cabinet (or wallpaper, or other paper for color) for sparkle and brightness. This is pretty busy and too full for my taste, but I like the way they interspersed the china and glassware instead of just lining it up, and have added other accessories for interest:I think this one veers back into store display, but would mix up what you're doing now in a more interesting way. And the cabinets are closer in size to yours. I'd still add some more variety, myself. Maybe you could do something like this on a couple of the shelves and add a variety of things on the other shelves:...See MoreHelp Designing Our Dining Room - Round or Rectangle?
Comments (7)A round will likely work better with the shape and function of the space. Often laying out the shapes and sizes can be helpful to see how it will look in the space. Using cardboard, painters tape, blankets, etc can help simulate the table. We often suggest 24" per person for elbow room. Then as far as wall or furniture clearance, a minimum of about 30-36". If you have more room that that, even better. A 70" round will fit 8-10 people. Chairs size and level of individual comfort will impact the space allowed per person, but this size will function well.
