Kitchen appliance dilemma
Comments (1)Right off the bat, I'd say you can save $500 by getting the Sharp microwave drawer - I thought all the microwave drawers were made by sharp and rebranded by others....See MoreHelp with Kitchen layout - ARG design, appliance layout
Comments (31)Doug already knows my views about cooktops on islands. So, I didn't share it when critiquing the original design. My opinion only, but putting a cooking surface on the island is a decision of last resort. Both safety and efficiency are compromised by this type of arrangement. I think the Buehl's idea of using that beautiful front window area for dining is inspired. It would get you and additional 28 sq.ft. in the kitchen. That's not chump change. That front window would be a lovely spot to sit with a cup of coffee and watch the kids. The light would be glorious. Seriously consider moving the kitchen to the rear, moving the dining room to take advantage of the window and sew/craft in the now freed up space in the front of the house, The old dining room in front could be used for a flex room/library/study/extra bedroom for overflow guests/sewing room/home office. Like Doug will tell you, everything is a compromise. Every decision effects another decision. It's just a question of how many comprises you have to make....See MoreL shaped kitchen with island - appliance layout help needed
Comments (8)I'm not sure which layout I like best yet, and it might not be any of them. Here's why. Are you really going to spending your entire time entertaining at your sink? Point being, I actually think an island sink is in the way of any entertaining (and any view) and really limits your prep space. If I'm entertaining, I wash dishes at the end of the party. I try to load dishes into my dishwasher as the event progresses, but I like the island clear of anything since that's where people tend to gather. Having a sink in the middle of the entertaining space gets in the way of all the action. Add dishes that are waiting to be washed will just add to the mess. Having a clear island gives you a TON of prep space. Your prep space in all 4 of those options above is really choppy. So, I'd put your micro drawer in your island. You could also try putting either 1 or both your ovens in your island. Put your dishwasher and sink in your perimeter....See MoreKitchen remodel - appliances dilemma
Comments (11)I think you are over thinking this. Most appliances - especially ones that are middle of the road are replaced in older homes without issues because the dimensions are standard. Dishwashers are 24". The dilemma with refrigerators is generally with older homes where the refrigerator space is too short or too narrow to accomodate more modern refrigerators. You would have to determine whether you want a 36" or 42" inch wide or something slightly different. When I was looking the standard height of a refrigerator was 69" - I did get a KA model that was 72" but that was an anomoly. You would have to think about general styles and clearances so that there would be adequate space to open doors but a competent designer would be able to advise on that. Are you going with a stove or a wall oven? Gas or induction? What width. Wall ovens are generally 30" wide and so if you are getting wall ovens you would configure the kitchen with a 30" tall cabinet intended to house wall ovens. Do you want space for a microwave drawer. Also given supply chain issues I am not sure there are going to be great bargains available in the future especially if you care at all about quality and functionality....See Moretparillo18
