Track Lighting - All or Nothing with Old Lights

Hello all:

I am very new to the concept of track lighting. I just moved into a place that has it. It's not a recent installation by any means. I believe it's a Hampton Bay EC track.

Here's the weird behavior I'm seeing. The lights that were in the track when I moved in are dimmable ones where I can't remove the bulb. I wanted to switch to Philips Hue bulbs so I can color and have all of the "smart" lighting features, so I purchased these lights:

I put in Philips Hue GU10 bulbs and when I added them to the track, they worked great.

But then... when I took all of the old lights off, suddenly the lights stopped working. If I put just one of the old lights back onto the rack, all the lights (that is, the ones I bought and the one I just put on) light up. But if it's just the lights above with the Philips Hue bulbs, they don't light up.

I put a voltmeter on the track. It's clear that when I put one of the old lights in, there is voltage across the rails. Otherwise, there is not.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on?

Here's one wrinkle. The wall switch is a dimmer. The old lights are dimmable, but the Philips Hue bulbs are not. But the dimmer is at the very peak and the new lights with the Philips Hue bulbs WORK when somewhere on the track I have one of the old lights.

Any ideas are so welcome, because I am stuck.

Thank you. If I can provide any more info, just ask, and I will go out of my way to provide it so I can get your input if you think you've got something!!
