Comments (3)Are you going to paint the rest of the trim and moulding? If you paint all of the darker trim (stair risers, stair stringers, doors, door casings, mouldings, etc) a semi-gloss white, and leave the stair treads and flooring the natural wood, that would look very bright and contemporary. Comments (0)So I did not have the foresight to sand or strip the right handrail before my carpenter finished our new stairs. What's the easiest and least messy way to prep the rail for painting? I know it's not recommended to paint over the varnish? Should I just use a primer like Kilz and call it a day? Comments (3)Your best bet is to match the stairs to the flooring on the lower level. That's what you'll see most often advocated for, especially by the knowledgeable people, here on Houzz.
