landscaping bed in front of the house

The front of our house has a yew hedge that I like, but we lost the yew to the right of the entry. I have since put rose bushes there but it is a bad choice since the deer eat the roses and it additionally it makes the house look unbalanced since there seems to be a hole where the yew once was. The yew on the left side of the door is a bit puny so I would like to remove it and am trying to decide what I could put on either side. I think it would take too long to replace it with another yew. I was thinking maybe a dwarf pyramidal shape evergreen or a small ornamental like a acer maple. Advice.
