Does this concrete mold for basement walls look ok?

Has anyone seen a concrete mold like this (non-flat) for basement walls?

Even if not, do you like it ok for a hardie board house? Just looking for informal opinions. Also including a picture of the style of house (but where you can see the basement walls below porch), and the a picture of the exterior color scheme.

Looks too contemporary for the style of the house. Maybe ok if not much shows.

The basement walls of those houses are hidden by porches which is good because the concrete pattern is unattractive.

I'm no expert, but I'd think it's worth doing, especially if you have anyone in the house with allergies or health conditions that are affected to mold. We had a huge mold problem in our basement earlier this summer (due to groundwater seeping in slowly through the walls. No leaks, no floods, just high humidity over a long period of time), and are having the entire basement redone. The mold remediation contractor found a lot of mold hidden underneath the carpet, since it stays perpetually damp, and there's plenty of "food" for the mold. I read an article that said carpet should only be installed in the basement if there's adequate "subflooring" or "underflooring" installed. Carpet laid directly onto the concrete will almost inevitably result in mold and the musty basement smell. For what it's worth, we've decided to do away with carpet entirely, and are looking into a waterproof vinyl floor.

For the walls, I would just use a gloss latex house paint. Gloss will be easier to clean and also make the room seem a bit larger. Brush on the first coat to make sure don't miss any surface imperfections, and you could roll on the second coat with a fairly thick (1/2") roller. For a small laundry room, I'd probably go with a single sheet of vinyl flooring, but the Allure looks like it'd do the job. This post was edited by randy427 on Wed, Oct 29, 14 at 23:15

Good morning, I emailed the architect and he said he was always for keeping the door but ultimately it's my decision. According to him, it wouldn't add much additional expense to remove that door and put a window there, if that's what we wanted. So, that's a relief. He thought the flow was good as is. I bet he probably doesn't do a lot of the cooking ( or cleaning) in his family. I can't imagine being jammed up in that corner loading the dishwasher. The door , we were going to replace the existing door with, would have probably been a full panel of glass for more light in the kitchen. Not a good combination with a dishwasher behind it. Now, I just have to get my dh on board! Garden window ( behind sink) in door mode- I don't think this would be possible as right outside our sliding doors ( in breakfast room) is a raised stone patio. The stairs leading down to the side yard and beyond are almost directly under this window. Also, turning the window (to the right of the range) a door is also impossible as the outside stairs leading to the basement are almost right underneath. It would have been a great idea to turn that area into a mudroom of sorts. Measurements- the only measurements not listed on the layout above, I think, are the two window measurements ( flanking the range) and aisle widths. Those windows are 28" wide by 39.5" high. The aisle widths are 3ft 6", if I recall correctly. The kitchen is on the west side of the house so we get direct sun as it's setting. Please, if there is anything I left out, ask away! Here are some progress photos. The room is trimmed out now and primed with BM Silver Cloud. My initial intent was to use that for the ceiling and then Mt Rainier Grey for the walls. Now, with the prime, it looks too cold. So, I'm going one further step down to BM Winter Lake and changing the ceiling color to BM Harbor Fog. With no natural light, it's tricky with these colors. I'll post more photos when we are complete. Any comments/suggestions are welcome!

The pattern you show is a modern ribbed split face pattern. Is there are reason you don't just want a smooth foundation?

If the foundation walls are hidden by the porches I'm not sure it makes much of a difference if the walls are patterned or not. I would select whatever is cheapest which probably be plain, flat walls.

Go for flat and smooth. Easy - and likely be a better finished product. No one is being fooled by thie look. (and it's not that attractive anyway)

You can always paint it to match the siding color and if you don't like that - changing it to another coverring is going to be WAY easier on smooth than that surface.

Your basement shouldn't be a feature. Cover it up with foundation plantings.

The brick pattern in the concrete forms were developed to add interest to exposed concrete foundation walls. They make me appreciate the honesty of a flat concrete wall.

Thanks everyone. The issue is that we were initially given two subs to pick from, and were told that one of them was cheaper because he only had this one mold/form to choose from. However, I thought we went with the more expensive guy because the other guy refused to give us a quote (probably because of distance). But here recently after being on his list a little bit, we discovered we picked the guy with that mold. (Probably didn't tell us as he's worked with my father-in-law before who will be our contractor- and father-in-law didn't say anything). We are getting quotes from a couple other guys, but going to have to decide whether to stay with this guy if he ends up being cheaper, or so we don't have to wait on another guy. A little unsure how I feel about the look.

From looking online, it looks like this is faux brick mold maybe, and there are some nice interior paints of it, but I cannot find a single exterior photo.

My husband says we could just sure wall it or put stucco over it, but I know very little about those processes.
