Spring has sprung....
Comments (42)Jo, Since they were in quart pots, presumably they had a good root system when you got them and you also had them very well-covered, so there's a good chance they survived and are just slow to leaf out. It is a good sign that Dorothy's fig made it through the tough winter because your weather was not that different from hers this past winter. Hopefully their roots remained moist all winter because moist roots are less likely to freeze than dry ones. Here in our county, figs are leafing out and have been since at least last week, but then we were in the 80s a lot the last couple of weeks, and even hit the 90s one day, so almost everything is leafing out now--even my chaste tree is leafing out and it usually is one of the last trees here to break dormancy. Almost all of us had some winter temperatures that took our plants at least one zone colder than usual and that might have killed a few plants but at our house nothing in the ground died, although plants I was overwintering in the garage did not survive. I hope your figs made it. I should think that if they are going to leaf out on the existing trunk, they will leaf out by mid-April. If they froze back and are regrowing from the ground, they may be later than that. Now, stop "watching" them. You know that a watched pot never boils! Dawn...See MoreSpring has sprung
Comments (5)You might not know it, but you can go to "Your Houzz" and put in the space for last names, the zone where you live. Notice ravencajun and I have done that. It might give some information to others about where you live and the weather conditions you are putting up with. Imagine trying to garden in the Boston area!!!...See MoreSpring has sprung!
Comments (84)Missi - I think our weather in KC is similar to your's in IA. Lots of great pics above... but I've gotta say I'm thankful my hostas aren't very far along. I have pips galore, but nothing is up very far, and there's no unfurling at all... all good, since we're having some really cold weather this weekend and possible snow on Sunday. However, I have about 50+ plants hanging out in the family room, in front of the windows, that I'm raising for the club sale - and they all look great and grow a little more each day. So that's fun. And I'm going to visit a local nursery having it's spring extravaganza tomorrow - with 20% off - and hoping to snag some clematis... and whatever else I might find. Warmer temps are coming soon....See MoreEnd of Feb / 1st week of March 2022
Comments (70)HJ, sure wish you all could overturn their plans. I'm thinking Bruce is going to set 4/23 as SF. In that case I think I'll wait another week to start my tomatoes! I'm feeling downright cavalier about starting them so late. Yay! I ordered color-coded plant labels this year. Kind of a waste of money when I usually use vinyl venetian blinds. But Walmart didn't have the short cheap $5 ones, and they were much more expensive online. So I splurged. 8 different colors and a Staedtler marking pen. I had 3 varieties of peppers that didn't germinate. Wacky and one of them was Ashe County--so am going to try it again. I'm sitting on the deck potting up peppers at the moment. These Numex Centennial ones germinated so successfully I'll have extras if anyone wants one. https://victorygardeners.com/product/numex-centennial-pepper/ Know exactly what you mean about the "end-of-winter" look, HJ. And I haven't touched any of the plant/flower beds, "leaving the leaves," ya know. Not planning to touch it for another few weeks. UGLY beiges and browns. Reminds me of driving from MN to WY several years ago, in March. There wasn't any snow on the ground. I said it was just one big brown blob, all the way across South Dakota, even the cows were all brown. Well, back to transplanting....See MoreLynn Dollar
