Hiding an Outlet in a Bathroom Vanity
Comments (5)It's not against code to install an outlet in a cabinet as long as the outlet remains accessible. And if there's a door or drawer, the outlet is considered accessible. Most times the outlet itself is mounted in the cabinet back itself, and the hair dryer's (or whatever) cord gets plugged into the outlet. With a drawer provisions have to be made so there are no pinch-points for the cord. I'll make a cutout in the drawer back, or I'll shorten the overall length of the drawer, so the drawer back doesn't hit the plug. If the outlet is to be installed on the moving drawer itself so that the outlet moves with the drawer, then the proper cable has to be used to run the electricity out of the wall and to the outlet. Regular romex is not approved for flex situations like this. Even if you use an approved cable, the inspector might nix the installation, or your electrician might not want to do that installation under his ticket. The outlet on the drawer itself just opens itself to trouble, either during installation, during inspection, or down the road liability. That's why 99% of the time the outlet gets installed on the cabinet itself....See MoreNeed an extra outlet in the bathroom and want some opinions
Comments (8)The more i research this, the more a 3 gang box sounds like a better idea. Thanks guys. Would a 3 gang box screw into the 2 X 4 stud and still have enough support for an in wall night light / recepticle / switch? The stud is on the right side of the box so if i kept the nightlight to the far left i shouldn't have too much of a problem with the box flexing when pushing and pulling plugs from the center recepticle. Or would a 3 gang old work box work better?...See Morebathroom outlet and lights
Comments (3)intresting why the inspector told me to do it that way. I did get two wall sconces at Lowes that have switches on them..... they are a nice antique brass with a nice glass shade and weren't expensive and don't look bad at all. I have them in my place and don't mind them at all. I do like the Idea of adding in a switch next to the GFCI outlet. I do know all the breakers are 20 amp seimens breakers in a 100 amp panel so there is a possablily it is on its own. Nothing in the panel is labled so I would have to start flipping them till the right one is found and see if that's all that is off when I find the right one....See MoreBathroom lighting size and placement
Comments (9)Hi - I don't know if it's better to start a new post about this ongoing dilemma so I'm posting here and hopefully someone will see it. We are now having mirror issues with this same bathroom and I was hoping to get some opinions. Here is the wall right now, the two lights were just installed (they will have glass covers on them but don't right now, they won't be that bright!) Vanity will be on the left, flush with the wall, toilet on the right: We had found the perfect framed mirror to span the whole wall - I measured it, it fit exactly, and then the crew had to build out the wall just slightly on the right and now it doesn't fit by about half an inch. I am back to square one and wondering about my options. Here's how it would have looked with the full mirror: Unfortunately the search to find that perfect mirror took forever and it doesn't seem possible to find one that fits the new specs without going custom (~$500 vs the $50 I spent on the mirror!) The wall is exactly 59" wide and the space allowed by the new outlet and the lights is 30". The mirror we found was 25" tall. I'm only finding long enough but too narrow or way too tall. I don't want to go back to having just a mirror over the vanity, partially because we had those lights installed and it seems like it would look strange to have a light over the toilet for no reason (right?). Also I had really wanted to have more mirror space since our kids will be sharing this bathroom and the vanity top is pretty small (24"). I'd also been hoping to avoid a frameless mirror that is glued to the wall. I'm wondering if it would be weird to have a mirror that's *almost* as wide as the wall and balance out the extra space with framed art/photos. Like this: I'm going to try to find a mirror that I can actually bring home and return if need be, but for now I just have to imagine it. I can't seem to find photos of what I'm thinking. Thoughts? Thanks!...See MoreK R
