What Is The Least Fragrant Of The Most Fragrant Roses?
Comments (17)I get very little scent from Sombreuil (the large-flowered climber). Occasionally its scent wafts down the side yard where it's planted, but that's it. SDLM is only faintly fragrant to me, too. Blush Noisette is said to be one of the most fragrant, and I barely get anything from it. My allergies diminish my sense of smell, I know. Visitors come to the cemetery rose garden declaring that the scent bowls them over as soon as they get out of the car, and I barely notice it. I had a few days of sinus clarity this spring, and was astonished at the fragrance. The damask scent, fortunately, penetrates my congestion, as do musks and a few of the teas. Comments (18)Idabean/Marie - No formal ratio. I mostly look at the ultimate size of the clematis and make sure that it won't totally cover & overwhelm the shrub. A clematis like Sweet Autumn Clematis has a reputation for being a huge plant, a bit of a thug. So I probably wouldn't plant it on a shrub , but plant it on a fence, trellis or tree. (Actually, since it has the potential to be invasive, that's one I wouldn't plant at all - I have enough trouble with oriental bittersweet and J. honeysuckle) I've seen pictures of C. montana planted in a 40 foot tall evergreen, maybe a Thuja. I also plant the shrub and let it get established before planting the clematis. I plant the clematis outside of the ultimate dripline of the shrub at maturity and then use a bamboo stake or two to guide it to the shrub. When I first started combining clematis with shrubs, I did plant one clematis that was too exuberant for the shrub it was near, so I put a trelllis behind the shrub. Now the clematis climbs into the shrub and from there onto the trellis, so it has worked out okay. I guess that I wouldn't also plant a 5 foot clematis on a huge lilac or full sized thuja since it would get lost, but that hasn't really come up for me. I don't know if that answer was helpful at all . . ....See MoreWhat fragrant plant/flower is most evocative to you of Louisiana?
Comments (13)Finally a topic dear to my heart. In the last year I discovered smell. Yes Jasmine fills the garden in the evening. But then there are 4 O'clocks. And then try Angel's Trumpets. Or Acidanthera. Or Moon Flower. If you have not tried some scent gardening, you have not yet gardened. Antique roses. For most it is in the late afternoon/early evening that you have to walk the gardens to appreciate, but you have not gardened until you get past the visual and into the scent. I promise it will add an entirely new dimension to your gardening. Enjoy. Here is a link that might be useful: My Garden Journal...See MoreWhat are your most fragrant roses today?
Comments (220)Kristine - that sounds divine!!! Pictures when you have them!! Needmoremulch - wow - rose damask fragrance? Looks like a keeper. mmmmm :) Totoro - in my old house, I planted DD, and I could smell it from 8 feet away....and I hated, hated the smell. I had to get rid of it. I like the smell of myrrh...but that one was disgusting. I bet if I grew it in a pot (it was in the ground), the fragrance would be more manageable.
