Soffit / Ceiling Dilemma
Comments (5)GailoTX, I have soffits and I'm in TX too. Mine are for HVAC duct, so short of rebuilding the entire 1st floor ceiling, they had to stay. One thing that may help is to take your cabinets all the way to the ceiling. You can keep your existing ones, just have them taken down and reset higher. Then you can have someone, DH or carpenter make you an open shelf below. For the tall cabinets such as the oven and fridge, maybe have them add new sides to form an open shelf on top. Are you considering painting? If so, maybe paint the uppers in a lighter color. That might help it feel less top heavy with all the soffits. Consider adding crown molding to the higher part of the ceiling to make it feel more complete. Like this: Or a beadboard and beam ceiling to draw the eye up to a feature: Check out Anne Turner's kitchen. She took her short cabinets to the ceiling and added a useful shelf below. She didn't have soffits, but the idea is similar. See the link below momto4boys here on GW did a facelift to her builder grade oak. She added an extension to the top and added crown. It's not quite to the ceiling, but still a great idea. She added glass to some of here cabinets which also helps to draw the the eye to the pretty stuff. I've bought a former kitchen display that came with this color granite. I haven't seen anyone on this board with this color. Comments (5)A painters trick is to paint all the same color but use different sheens. Ceiling in matte and beams in eggshell or semi. It will both blend in and also provide a contrast. People always swear its different color that just perfectly matches. Painters also mix some wall color into the ceiling color....See MoreTray ceilings dilemma
Comments (25)I'm just going to echo what rainyseason wrote above. There are really well-done trays that look fabulous both in the room and in the context of the whole house, and then there a whole lot of shockingly bad, really tragic examples out there too. My gut reaction is that most of the trays in tract builds look pretty bad. That's obviously just my opinion and you know what they say about those. :) However they are over-done right now, so again IMO the poorly done ones are going to really "date" a home in a few years (if they don't already). This is one of those design details that leaves a strong presence in a house. If you really want to do a tray, my only advise is to make sure you're working with someone who really knows what they are doing, lest you end up with that burgundy monstrosity upthread. :)...See Moreceiling dilemma
Comments (6)Thanks! I know it’s a horrible picture but those cabinets are going to be completely removed and so I was just trying to show the ceiling. Thanks for any and all feedback...See MoreMerris Delane
