Living room furniture placement help
Comments (3)I think your room is beautiful, warm and inviting as is. I think the fireplace is lovely as it is too. I'm wondering if swapping the positions of the sofa and matching (?) chairs would address the light and artwork issues you mentioned. You could put the small table with the lamp between the two chairs, bringing that light source more toward the center of room, which I think will illuminate the space a bit better. It's hard to tell from the photo, but It seems like putting the sofa on the longer wall would allow you to add a floor lamp at end of the sofa (the end near the checked chair) to bring light to that end of the room, while also leaving an unbroken space for art work on the long wall....See MoreHelp on living room furniture placement
Comments (9)From your description, a full three feet in front of the box bay will be required for your traffic pattern. That means the bay should not be considered a part of the living room and subtracts 3' from its length. The size of your bay will totally determine what can go there. You might do a window seat or just a collection of plants if it's small. It would have to pretty deep to hold chairs and a table. Any more suggestions and sizes will require photos and dimensions....See MoreAwkward Living Room - Furniture Placement Help!
Comments (13)Here is just one example. This is the lazy boy Duo Ryder reclining sofa. Clean lines. Back remains straight when you recline. So, it is a wall-hugger or incliner. Keep in mind, for this particular one, it does not recline fully. Slight recline and foot rest rises. Other models I mentioned have a much greater recline. Depends on your budget, style, and what you want functionally in a recliner. Many now have usb ports in the recline button. You can see it one the side of the chair below. Also, consider a battery pack. Finally, some have an articulating headrest. The Duo Ryder does not, as it does not recline much. The articulating head rest allows your head to be pushed forward to view tv/read (when you are reclined). Do your research. As others have mentioned, be cautious about sectionals. No one wants to sit in the corner. Adults who aren't couples prefer an individual seat. Finally, unless you buy a modular sectional, you are committed to that arrangement for the life of the sectional. They are for some people, but not for all. Here is a floor plan for you. With the base heaters, you will have to float furniture. I recommend a reclining sofa and 2 chairs like this. This is a to-scale 10 x 19 room. Not sure of opening and window measurements, but they are approximate. Let me know if I can help any further....See MoreUnimaginative person needs help with living room furniture placement
Comments (25)I am so touched that you all have taken the time to give me so much help, thank you so much!!! (And thank you to my husband for helping me move the furniture to try out all the suggestions this evening.) Some specific replies, in order: Jenny, I tried the arrangement as you described and like it, it has the advantage of having a nice view out the window from the loveseat, and creating a cozier conversational area. The bench could go in front of the window. I've moved it temporarily to the foot of my bed where it is working well. (I have a different bench in the front hall.) Mytwo cents, I also tried the loveseat in front of the window and it looks better than I expected. Thank you for the diagram, so helpful. I'm going to add a photo of my sofa/loveseat fabric, and of the area rug. I still like the chair you sent me a link to, I prefer the lighter blue but think maybe the navy would look better with the current furniture and rug? I really like the window treatment however, though there is a bit of clutter, I adore the view out my window so don't want to block it. I'll add a photo. The hanging basket had to be shorn recently so isn't at its best yet but overall it's a lovely view. There is no pink in the area rug, just blues and greens and a cream background. The wall color is Sherwin Williams Liveable Green 6176. I like the idea of a blue coffee table. And I love all the pillows, I definitely agree they would pull in the painting (which I really like, too), as well as the carpet and walls, perfect choices, thank you so much. maymay99, I am open to another color, do you have a suggestion? I use blue and green in my kitchen and attached family room, like this room, with the addition of touches of yellow and a bit of pink. I was going for a more serene look in the living room, just blue and green, but am open to adding another color. auntthelma, if the loveseat is under the window, it does not block the entrance to the room on the north wall as I thought it would, there is room. And I agree about the sofa being more welcoming if it faces the main room entrance. simplynatural, thank you so much for taking the time to do the diagrams, that is SO helpful, both for furniture placement and to give me an idea of what else the room needs. We tried all the arrangements. And yes, I do still want to use that mirror (thanks for making that connection), it is beautiful, however, my husband just told me it may be too heavy to hang as the wall studs are not where they'd need to be. (I'm buying the mirror from a friend and can return it if we can't make it work.) #1 I like the idea of ottomans in the center and it is not a problem to not have a direct path to the door on the west wall, that is not a path that is normally used. (The kitchen is on the other side of the door and there is a separate, more direct way to access the kitchen.) The bookcases are a great idea, my husband and I both like that. #2 The loveseat moved closer to the sofa is cosier. I like mirrors used vertically but not sure it would work in this room, I'll have to look at it for awhile. #3 The loveseat in front of the window works a lot better than I thought it would, definitely a possibility. #4 Now that I've pictured round ottomans, that's what I want! Plus they would be extra seating. I do love my coffee table though and it works well in #2. All the diagrams and specific suggestions have been so helpful to me, thank you all again so much, you are all so kind. And I welcome any more thoughts or suggestions. I'm adding photos of my sofa and loveseat fabric, the area rug, the view out the window on the east wall, and the mirror that I love but am now not sure I can use. (And I'm wondering if it's a little fancy for the room? Thoughts?)...See MoreMarissa Brooks
