Paint and curb appeal Split Level Home
Comments (5)teacats has lots of good suggestions. As splits go, yours is pretty nice. I dug around a bit and found this link for a small book on ideas for splits. I had thought of some kind of trellis to unify the front. Indeed, that is one of the suggestions in the booklet. So, maybe there isn't money to change rooflines, etc. But of you see something you like, you could start working in that direction with landscaping (hardscapes in particular) or color. Btw, I have always thought that splits are a very practical way to live. Easier for older folks and younger too, where steps can be a barrier. A nice way to "stay connected" to family. You're never too far away. My split plan rancher has a feeling of real disconnectedness. But since DD is almost 14, maybe that's good! ;-) Oh, there is another split transformation on the Cottage Living website, but it involved a huge budget. The house is totally re-made. It is amazing. Here is a link that might be useful: Great ideas for splits....See MoreHelp with curb appeal & paint colors!
Comments (8)I was hoping that there would be room to frame out the bottom portion to make it look more substantial but pillars are right to the concrete edge. Comments (35)d_gw, the accents on the quoins were not original. They were added by the prior owner, probably in 2000? I always liked them, but I did a crude mock-up photo below to get an idea if it is better or worse with them. There is also a picture of what they look like as we still have originl brick quoins in the back. bpathome, climbing roses would be pretty but the kids still play sports and ride back there so that probably wouldn't be a good combo. Maybe add some metal trellises. I would love a little trellis over the garage door too. Lighting would be practical too for playing when it's dark. Laurie, I also did a crude mock-up of more chimney in the front to see of it looks better or worse. It's a really big chimney without the tree in front of it. Here's the crude mock-up with the original below it. You have to click the photos to make them larger. The mocked up chimney loses the herringbone detail because I just cut and paste the top of the chimney onto the bottom. I also removed two rows of the contrasting quoins from the left side of the house. So, opinions, better or worse? MOCK UP - EMPHASIZE CHIMNEY (Remove Tree & Contrast on Quoins) Brick quoins in the back, it's just four raised rows of brick. A little hard to even make out the detail. Actually, they probavly aren't called quoins if they are brick??...See MoreHouse below street level..curb appeal HELP!
Comments (14)I agree with a lighter/brighter front door - you choose the color. Container planting flanking the garage would soften and green up the space. It looks like you may have a space in front of the house to the left of the stairs from the street that is flat. Consider a firepit/chairs or courtyard garden with container planting to make it seem like an inviting place to go. That would also improve your view from the front room's window....See Morepalimpsest
