Weird that it's green down there. Is the pot somehow translucent so a little light gets in? Anyway, toss it in the compost pile.

I've never tried them but if you're worried about the reservoir getting too full (and that's a good thing to worry about), you could just drill a hole in the side of the pot at or near the top of the reservoir. The reservoir will fill to the spot you choose and the excess water will spill out the side instead of going up past the reservoir. Here's what I'm thinking though: If the water is low enough in the reservoir that the roots don't get root rot, then that means the roots aren't touching the water....what's the function of the reservoir? If your roots can get to the water in the reservoir, that means their sitting in water and they could very easily start rotting. I think your gut reaction was right. I don't trust this drainage either. Besides, it's such an inexpensive and simple design. If it consistently worked the way it was supposed to, every single one of the commercial nurseries would have jumped all over it. Especially here in So. Cal. where water restrictions are putting wholesalers out of business. They'll try anything to save water at this point. I would just punch holes in the bottom and use it like any other pot.

It seems like miraclegro and fungus gnats go hand in hand. Fungus gnat larvae feed on the organic matter that our soilless mixes are made of! Add excess moisture to these mixes and you create a perfect environment for the pests. They will feed on tender root tips right along with the peat moss and other tiny bits in the potting medium. That the larvae are feeding on fungi and bacteria within the medium is not correct....it's the actual components of the mix that they ingest. Miraclegro is a fine textured peat based product; it seems to stay excessively moist for long periods of time. Providing our plants with a coarse textured, fast draining mix can go a long way in preventing a habitat for these pesky insects. Careful attention to proper watering is also important, but a really coarse mix is almost impossible to over water. Larvacides, such as Gnatrol or mosquito dunks, are excellent means of control but focusing on fungus or other organisms in the medium is not the way to go.

Well, here's the inside of it. Whatever it was has either decayed beyond recognition or left long ago. When I went to pull the top off it, I notice a small slit in the covering close to the edge, so it's possible whatever was in it emerged and that is just some silk remnants or something. Any thoughts on what type of insect makes something like this?
