Best inexpensive pots/planters for roses?

Used to get wooden planters from a local shop but they closed... just my luck. Have a few pricey terracotta pots outdoors, but with a new order of David Austin roses coming this spring, I need four new pots for the patio and would love to spend less than $800...

Anyone found good, sturdy inexpensive pots for roses?

Would love some tips!

Not sure what part of the country you are in, but if you have an At Home store in your area, they have a lot of large planters at good prices.

Resin pots are lightweight, inexpensive and come in a huge range of sizes, shapes and colors. They are also extremely weather resistant.

For $800, you should have no trouble finding 4 good pots. I saw some good looking ones for under $100 at Home Depot the other day. Looked like maybe 15 gallon.

I had horrible experience with those self-watering pots. And I promised myself NEVER to buy them again! You see, roses grow very quickly and they don't like their feet wet. The one I had has this black plastic layer with tiny holes that you put inside the pot. When it was time to transplant my roses, all the roots had penetrated through those tiny holes and they wrapped themselves around the black plastic layer. They looked suffocating and their roots were wet all the time. Ordinary, cheap plastic pots are much better than those self-watering pots.

Gail knows I am a pack rat, so I knew she would understand.................LOL> Just never know when you may need one of those items you planned to throw away. Even when I "clean up", I usually put more back than I throw away...................it's a sickness.............LOL Also, Gail, the neighbors may weigh in on the "crazy lady" when they hear me banging on the pie tin with a metal spoon trying to chase the cowbirds away from the feeder so the little birds can eat.

What happened was that Loews wanted to compete with Home Depot but didn't have anything competitive. Sears had bought OSH, which had always done well; but when Sears purchased OSH, Sears handed to OSH a requirement to make over and above to take care of the Sears main debt. This was too much for OSH to overcome, even though as a business it never went down hill. When Sears went into real hardship OSH was available and Loews bought it and Loews paid for the upgrades, deciding to keep the brand name since it is well respected. On top of that I have found that many of the older staff were ACE hardware people and I've always found ACE stores to be fantastic; they just often were not able to survive against Home Depot. I believe that is hte reason that you may find young people at OSH who may only know some, but they are getting great training from the older staff who are terrific. ANd over and above all Loews really has pushed the customer service. There are 5 stores in a 25 mile radius in my area and I know and shop at all of them and just really respect and enjoy the staff. It turns out that they do get solid training.

I have mums that overwinter as true perennials, and that type is typically for sale now as small plants at nurseries that carry a range of perennials, either locally or mail order. For instance, I know Bluestone Perennials has quite a number of types of them and they had things on sale a couple of. weeks ago. I have seen them at regular local nurseries as well. Be aware that they spread relentlessly and need dividing every year or two. So if you don’t need 20 different types and you don’t need them all this fall, a little patience will save some $. The fall sold ones aren’t hardy enough to winter over here in my garden. They are purely seasonal annual decor.

I've just got 2 cement-looking resin planters 22Wx20H from Costco for $21.99 each. They had beautiful ceramic planter (16 Wx20H) for $39.99 last year, probably they will be available in April/May.

I like homedepot.com for cheap large pots. Do you have Orscheln? I saw some nice large ones there the other day. Our local garden center has large (20 in?) Terra cotta pots for 20$. Those are my favorite.

The one I was tempted with at Orscheln:

What size pots do you guys use for David Austin roses? I remember reading recommended size of pots on their website and thinking it was very large.

Yulia, I've always gone about 18- 20 inches deep for pots since the rose roots grow down quite a lot. Best to give them plenty of room.
