I burned some of my roses
Comments (6)What you did is called "Spray Overload." If I had been in your shoes, I would have sprayed the Avid, because spider mites can defoliate a rose bush faster then a speeding bullet. Another thing, if you spray with Avid, you have to spray again in a couple days to get the newly hatched mites, because Avid is a contact spray. When I spray, I never mix the chemicals together. I know a lot of growers do, but I have found that singly is better. I also, never use Bayer, because I find that there are no silver bullets out there, no "One size fits all," and because around here Bayer doesn't do well at all. I don't know why, but it just doesn't. If the BS were to build up while you were away, there is a way to get rid of it once you are back. If you want to know how, go to "My Page," and email me to find out. I have been in this game for 30 years and know what I am talking about. Comments (23)Dizzy, it was definitely thrips. The horrible thing is they come back! My roses are now on a spraying schedule. I switch back and forth from an organic spray with spinosad as the main ingredient, and the Bayer Advanced Systemic(not the one with fertilizer that you water in the ground). I don't want them getting immune to them, so i alternate. Once you see damage, it's really too late for that shoot. You won't be able to recover the leaves, buds, or new shoots. The thrips suck the sap and juices from the base of the leaves, shoots, and buds causing deformity and stunted growth. Flowers won't bloom, or will bloom with microscopic petals. If i see damage, I immediately start the spraying routine: Thoroughly water all your rose plants deeply in the morning. In the afternoon, i remove all damaged leaves, shoots, and buds. finally, in the early evening i start the spraying. You don't want to spray the plants when the scorching afternoon sun is out. drench all healthy shoots, and make sure the spray gets in the base of every leaf and bud....See MoreMy Roses in Burning Heat...... I might move it to partial shade for better color. We are in hot & dry phase, up to 90 F, or 32 C." Straw: 90*F is not high heat for roses in my view. I mean in this temperature, my roses were performing very well. Could there be other (primary) reason for your Just Joey or any other rose not performing that well. I am not sure if 90*F alone is enough to cause deterioration in performance of a particular cultivar. I mean some mineral deficiency / excess or some issue with the soil that gets amplified due to rise in temp? Or could it be that my roses have slowly been acclimatized to perform better in heat? Just trying to understand what could be the reason for my Just Joey being quite yellow in 105*F and your's turning beige in 90*F. best regards PS: Sam, did you see the photos of Rose Biomes posted above? Jess: Alec's Red hasn't impressed me much. It is almost completely non fragrant since the temps rose above 100*F and is blooming sparsely. When I compare it's performance with many other roses, I would rate it quite low with regards to performance in summers though it performs much better when it is cooler. Comments (25)Yeah that sounds like a good idea Sheila...I never thought of something like that? How do those work exactly? And Seil I didn't plant in cardboard as in 'packaging the Rose came in' I mean I had moving style boxes I broke down and then I wet them down really good to put under mulch along the slope to deter weeds. I made sure to leave about 5" or so around each plant bare with a little mulch. I did however leave the soil on it when I planted, I didn't try to make bareroot? You think that could've caused it? I just want to know how to save these ...also it rained last night...not sure how hard because it ended at least an hour or two before I woke up so when I stuck finger in soil down so deep that I had no finger left! It felt pretty moist all the way down...but idk how much rain feel so idk if that could happen from the rain we just had overnight? And today has been overcast with next to no sun all day..so sun wasn't out to dry it out....See MoreKristine LeGault 8a pnw
