Hardie Trim for exterior column wrap -advice needed

Is this a good idea or not? We have to replace our front columns, under cover but at the outer edge of the porch. Older house, outside the city limits so the existing fluted columns are ~7' x 10' and appear to be wraps with no interior support post. This is Houston, so hot, rainy, sunny, We've had foundation repairs so we know the soil isn't stable. The contractor suggests 6x6 treated posts, wrapped with smooth or rustic Harditrim. I'm concerned about fiber cement base trim sitting on the brick floor even if the shaft is kept 1/4 off the floor, and about how the trim boards would be joined to remain straight and flush over time. Am I overthinking this or do I need to keep looking for fiberglass options? Thanks in advance.
