If we're talking beans, I'm always happy to bring out my bean arch. Love this thing!

It's 8 ft. tall, more or less, and you can walk through it---picking beans as you go. Somewhere or other on my computer is a diagram I drew to illustrate how we made it from one 16-ft. cattle panel (5 ft. wide) and some rebar. Very inexpensive.

My trellises are for veggies, mainly. I have a collection of different things; I have 2 sets of tomato ladders in red, a whole bunch of 5'+ spiral metal stakes, and a couple of decorative metal trellises which you just push into the ground, also some old aluminum poles from a volleyball set that are adjustable in height and a long piece of thin rebar that I wire on as a crosspiece at the top, to which I tie a trellis of garden twine for beans and peas. I learned how to tie my own trellis with twine from an old gardening TV show - I think it was Martha Stewart's show back in the day.

I've also made trellises with bamboo, scrap wood, and simply done the beanpole thing with long midribs from palm fronds too. Tree or shrub branches minus the leaves are easy, and good for supporting pea vines.

That sounds more like an antique mall than a thrift shop. For years I collected garden

related things. The best place to find them was yard sales, auctions and flea markets, like you find out in the country in small towns. I have picked up things put out for the trash, like my very favorite heavy duty trellis. I can't believe I forgot to get it when I moved from the place on the bayou.

One thing about collecting things like that, you hardly ever find what you are looking for when you go looking for a specific thing. There are some plant nurseries that sell interesting, vintage items, but they can be very pricey.

I'm thinking I may go to Tractor Supply tomorrow and have them deliver a couple of cattle panels and buy some zip ties and posts. I've watched multiple videos and think I can do this.

I've used those too. They work.

Years ago my FIL got construction 'mesh' it's very heavy metal wire in a grid, comes in "sheets" maybe 5ft x8ft. He made tomatoes cages which are sturdier and you can get your hands through it. Bet you could make bean 'huts' out of those too. Here are a couple of pictures of it as a cage and used flat for cucumbers.

Another thing that could work for beans would be my DHs hops tent. One tall poll with ropes come out out to each hops plant...he has pulley system that raised and lowered the ropes for harvesting.

Would upside down tomato cages be helpful?

Kath, have Tractor Supply bend the cattle panel and zip-tie the ends together. Keep the panel tied for a few days so it adjusts to being bent in half. This will make sure it doesn't fight you when you turn it into an arch.

I think the cattle panel cost $16. So sturdy! We put it up in 2013 or 2015, I forget which, and has been in use every year since. It hasn't changed a bit.

I built our 25ft long pea trellis using a couple of 4x4 posts and wire fencing with 3 rebars for supporting the middle. I did use it for climbing butter beans too and it works well. After the peas are done I then use it for a long row of corn. (below extra fencing was used to block deer from grazing on the peas). After the late corn is done I then plant a long row of fall crop of turnips, no climbing required. It works great for late cucumbers too.

I've also made tomato cages from scrap construction mesh - rolled into cylinders and secured with the ends of the wire bent into hooks. They lasted me for many years before some finally rusted away - I have 2 left now. I have a bunch of scrap rebar that I use for supports, driven into the ground and wired on.

Lattice panels work well, too. They are easily cut to whatever size you want, if the 4' X 8' doesn't suit you. They can be painted or left natural. I believe they are also available in white plastic. I used metal stakes driven into the ground to anchor them.

Kathsgrdn my SO has been nagging me for YEARS to let him get me or to get myself a little pickup truck to haul "my garden junk" as he calls it. I do not want a pickup truck. Besides, I told him, what is the point in keeping him around if he can't hook HIS pickup truck to his trailer and haul my stuff for me? I needed him to go pick up 2 pallets of Jungle growth dirt from Lowes not long ago. He sure does come in handy when he cooperates. I do have a small SUV that I will take to get smaller hauls on my own. Otherwise, I would have to either pay to get it delivered or not get it at all.

I have 2 of the 8' square pop up canopies - discarded by neighbors - that I use as frames for netting - to keep the critters off my fruit trees that are inside the netting canopy. I also have an old gazebo frame that was serving the same purpose for my blueberries, but wind, snow, deer assault, and rusted bolts that broke collapsed it this winter. So I am going to have to construct something - probably out of rebar and pex tubing.

I have also picked up two nice wooden arched trellises from Aldi in the past - one is actually a grill gazebo but it is great for my hardy kiwi vines. Both were at a much lower price than similar at the big box stores.
