Is it possible to rewire a regular hanging lamp as a track light?

When I was young, my parents had a large (9') round table that much of the time lived with one leaf dropped, up against the wall. For large occasions we would pull it out and open it up. The light they had was a Lightolier hanging lamp that was not only retractable in terms of height, but slid along a track so that it could be positioned over the center of the table wherever the table was. Now my husband and I are building a house, and we will use that same table in the same way: sometimes up against the wall and sometimes pulled out. I would love to use the same lamp (and have even found one), but wonder if there is a way that the wiring can be redone to work with track-lighting power. Does anyone know?
