which compact washer/dryer?
Comments (31)I had a second hand ASKO set that I loved, but the dryer kept dying on me. Service was in Saskatoon-several hours away. My Husband had enough, and we purchased a new Blomberg set. The dryer never worked right out of the box. Long story short, it was replaced, but not without several phone calls/emails. The washer is a little work horse, and does very well. Out of the 2, I prefer the ASKO as the wash and rinse options were more customizable. It also didn't shake the house apart when spinning. Crossing my fingers and hoping I have no further issues. Dryer is vented on the Blomberg as it was in the ASKO....See MoreHeat Pump / Ventless Dryers & Washer/Dryer Combos
Comments (2)Yes, I agree with getting a pair (whether you stack them or put them under a counter) -- I'm intrigued by the all-in-ones (and the LG gets pretty good reviews), but I do think that's a last choice if you really have very little room. I almost bought a pair with a ventless dryer last week, and I learned a couple of things to consider and check: Find out if you have the option to use a hose to empty the dryer condenser into the water waste line, and - if not - how to empty the condenser reservoir. Some are located in easier places than others. Check the required electrical outlets: The dryer will need a 220V connection but some washers are 220V and some are 120V -- but some machines allow you to plug the washer into the dryer, which means you'd only need one outlet plug (220V). And find out if you need to separately purchase a stacking kit, or if it's included in the cost. I do have the option to vent in my apartment, so I ended up going with a compact size that has a vented dryer, so I can't comment on any specific brands or models; when I was considering ventless, I was looking at Bosch, LG, or Blomberg. (I would have considered Miele, but it's way out of my price range.)...See MoreSpace required around compact washer/dryer set
Comments (14)Sarah, no worries at all! Believe me, I belabored this myself. You're exactly right. The units could move back in my setup. In my photo above that says "see the hose back there," it's showing the hose not entirely tucked into the space that is designed for it. So Miele has correct dimensions, and that drawing is exactly as they are built. The thing is that I put the box with plumbing on the right (as you're looking at the doors of the machines,) and I believe it's a shorter route to put them on the left. See the Miele drawing of the back of the machine and that will make more sense. I was going to ask you anyway, since you're space is tight but you can move a wall, where do you want the shutoff to be? I remember you said you really needed a plumber/contractor to work it all out, so I wonder if you have found one. Truth be told, you'll be able to work it all out in terms of the dimensions, but knowing where your existing electrical and water supply/drain are will be necessary. I think I told you before that I was sold on the Miele because there's no issue for access when maintaining the machines. Whirlpool evidently had the brilliant idea to place the lint clean-out in the back for their HP dryer, which means paying a tech at least 2X per year to pull the thing out just to clean it. Anyway... Also remember you're referencing in your first image the requirements for putting them in a closet. If you're not doing that, don't worry. And if you need more photos of the setup I have, please don't hesitate to ask. As I hear the laundry humming now, I think about all the questions I had before making the leap. It was a lot of work, and certainly expense too, but it's all worth it, and I hope it will be for you as well :-) p.s. Do you have a local dealer? That might help your questions. I asked mine to stop by while we were in construction, which he gladly did. In retrospect, I should have asked earlier. Those are the people who will be installing and servicing (hopefully not) those machines. And yes they're pricey....you do get some extra help for that. Good luck and keep me posted....See MoreCan a full-size washer & dryer fit in a 55-1/4 inch wide space?
Comments (30)Totally helpful comment<---- sarcasm. Obviously the OP's isn't, hence the reason for posting. In principle, knowing that they are only off by less than 5 inches from the standard dimensions could be helpful. That's likely just about the amount that a creative contractor could shave off. Open the walls, turn the studs by 90°, use thinner sheetrock, and maybe just push the wall over a tiny amount, and you are there. Then maybe fill the walls with spray foam to give them back some of the rigidity that they lost in the process. In practice, this is going to be prohibitively expensive unless the room was intended to have a full remodel anyway. So, yeah, you are right. That's not super helpful. And that's why I originally suggested looking into getting Miele washers/dryers. The higher purchase price is easily made up for by the cost savings of not having to completely gut the laundry room and remodeling it. Sounds as if there are a few other more compact alternatives, though. Good to know....See MoreRelated Professionals
