Kitchen backsplash help!!

So, we are finally remodeling our kitchen. We are installing white shaker and quartz countertop.

But, I am still debating with backsplash. Porcelain is more affordable and easy to clean, so I am leaning toward white subway tile. But, I don't want to go with 3 by 6 stacked shape... To me, it seems like more bathroom. So, here is the questions I need advice on.

1. Will Herringbon style be too much with our countertop? I was looking into something similar to this picture.

2. If I go with herrinbgon, which size of tile would be better, 2 by 8 or 3 by 12? Our space seems about similar to the picture above.

3. For finish, I like matte which looks more chic and modern, but heard it is hard to clean. Then for function wise, better to get glossy?

We already demoed so need to decide asap!!

Unsure about herringbone pattern in those size tiles since with little backsplash area you do not have room to show the pattern. It will just look like a bunch of "v" shapes. Go with a mosaic herringbone pattern instead.

A small backsplash area isn't that suited for a herringbone pattern. And those tile sizes in your OP certainly will not work with a small backsplash area. In addition, your thickly veined counter and also a herringbone pattern backsplash might be too much. Also note that a herringbone pattern is a more complex installation, and your installer better have top tiling skills and a lot of experience with herringbone. Make sure you ask him about that, and ask for photos of his herringbone tile installations he has done.

Some cautions about some things you mention: - white glass tiles can very easily end up looking green-y or blue-y ([this thread is one example[(https://www.houzz.com/discussions/white-glass-backsplash-does-not-look-white-dsvw-vd~820386) - you can see in one photo the difference between the unmounted tile and the mounted tile) - dark grout is very eye catching, so it's suuuuper important that the tiler is a meticulous sort - otherwise the dark grout just highlights all the wobbles and uneven grout thicknesses (that are a lot more common than you might think, but due to light grout, your eye doesn't immediately notice) - Be sure to plan for how you'll finish the edges where the tiles don't end at cabinets (ie peninsula/next to pantry) - schluter strip? Bullnose tile? - makes your life so much easier if you know before you buy your tile Can you post a couple/few pictures of kitchens that you like? Tiles that you like? Also, what is your countertop?

So that refrigerator in photo 2 is in the cavity next to your ovens in the first photo? I wouldn't tile that wall, based on the keyhole view I have. Are the kids that messy? Too, a full height tile wall is going to be much more sonically reflective than drywall. Tile would make little voices and little bangings and clangings a few notches more grating.

I'd go with an ivory tile that matches the cabinets. To find that tile you're just going to have to order/bring home lots of sample tiles to see them in your space with your light. Subways or 4" squares would give you a nice traditional look. Please show us images when you're done!

Since your cabinets don't go to the ceiling I would stop at the bottom of the hood. I also agree with you - white grout not dark. Beautiful kitchen!

have you considered a subway tile in a stacked pattern?

a small space would best be suited for a smaller tile, glossy, and white grout, I prefer avalance grout with a standard white tile. Forget about being messy, life is messy, be thankful he like to help in the kitchen. HAVE FUN!

Agree on the installation skill. You can definitely do herringbone pattern in small spaces with a smaller tile. Shades of white zellige in a gloss are not too busy and easy to clean. This is a 2.5" x 5".
