covered buttons for upholstery options?

Howdy!

I'm upholstering some chairs with diamond tufting and I can't manage to cover a single button. I've tried both types offered by Drizt (the "half ball cover" and the "craft cover") and I guess my fabric is too thick or my buttons are too small or I don't know what I'm doing (I suspect it is all three).

Are there other options that work better for upholstery fabric? Do I need to go to a larger size? (I am use 5/8" because they seem correct--there are 12 per chair so I don't want BIG ones.) Should I just give up and make a velvet bathrobe?

Suggestions please! Thanks. :)
