Remodeling Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Need a kids bathroom!

Hi All! We need a second bathroom with a tub for our two kids under 3 years old. Currently they bathe in the master bath which is clear across the house and their bathroom next to their rooms gets zero use.

I freshened up this bathroom 2 years ago when we moved in including new vanity, sink, toilet, medicine cabinet, & wallpaper.

I need a tub and also a shower head. I know this will likely mean needing a shower curtain to bathe kids safely, but if it gets more use, so be it!

I hate the big brown tiles. We currently have blue 2x10 tile in our kitchen (visible from this bathroom) and I am wondering if I could carry it through to this bathroom and if that would make sense.

I need help with the title + bathtub + shower head/knobs combination and overall look! Two kids (girl and boy) both under 3.

Change the wallpaper to a theme (wallpaper or a mural) kids will love with a matching rug. Maybe animals that will pick up the tan tones already in the shower, so they'll be happy to shower here. Tub baths are hard on mom and her back, so teach them to shower and shampoo now. Then hug a lot when you dry them off! Get a folding step stool to slide between toilet and vanity so they can step up to brush their teeth. Or convert the bottom drawer to a pull out step. Hang a fun mirror lower so they can see themselves. Get creative with the room as it is.

Pretty paper. I would just do a white bathtub and white tile surround. I just had a Kohler Belleweather tub put in a bathroom. Large format (12x24) white tile or a 4x16 subway. Get a kids shower curtain and colorful towels.

I can't speak from experience, but the Drake II mentioned above is very well spoken of over at Terry Love forums. If you want a skirted model for ease of cleaning, I've narrowed my own choice to an Aquia II or Vespin II based on my reading around here and TL. I myself am leaning toward the Vespin for the Sanigloss, larger water spot than Aquia (which is a dual flush, which tend to have smaller water spots), and dual cyclone flushing system. You might want to mosey on over and see if they have some threads on best models for multiple kids. Everyone seems to favor elongated seats for males though, apparently there is an anatomical issue with short bowls.

"The pull of that tub on the first floor for young families is a real selling point here. Any mom who has had to run up stairs constantly to stay with pre-schooled aged children in the tub, while trying to do laundry and get supper on the table can appreciate the usefulness of a main floor tub. " Yeah, um, no. As a mother with two little kids, I NEVER used the full bath on the main floor for bathing. If I'm making dinner and doing laundry, there's no way on God's green earth I've got kids in a tub as well. Kids in tubs need to be watched. If their bedrooms are upstairs, then that's where I bathe them. No slipping of wet feet going upstairs, no water tracked through the house to their bedrooms. However, my caveat to this is your house wouldn't be on my buyer's radar because I need a kid's bathroom with a tub upstairs, and if I could find a house in your price range where I didn't have to bathe my kids in the master bathroom, I'd take it every time.

Sterling makes a very nice "Vikrel" tub! it is typically less than $300 and it is deeper than most tubs, wider than a lot and some models have a sloped arm rest inside to make it more relaxing to sit in. We have it in our house and our 2 children take baths in it all the time! it's a great tub, we have installed it in many many remodels over the last 5 years.

I had the exact same problem. I picked out the vanity I wanted but did not think about the fact that it wasn't made to sit flush against the wall. I spent a month looking for something else, but in the end we decided to go with something shorter and have it not be against the wall. But we were going from 72" to 60" which is probably not workable in your mom's situation. I did find a lot of vanities that did have flat sides and could work in a corner, if you are willing to have the countertop fabricated. They just need to not have any trim detail on the top or bottom like the one you picked out does. I would just look at the ones without the pre-made tops. Because the pre-made top will still leave you with a slight gap because of the countertop overhang. This is an example: Avanity Modero which is sold everywhere, not just at Lowe's. The cabinet we ended up buying is an Avanity Madison which won't work for you, but I assume it is of similar quality. We are pretty happy with it. The drawers and doors have soft close but I do feel like the glides in my Ikea kitchen drawers are better quality. It is very pretty and I wanted a stained wood so I am really happy with our choice. If I had been willing to go with a painted finish, I think we might have stuck with the 72" Modero.

I dunno, kids get a lot out of the wind-down value of a bathtub.

Anyway, like what you did with the wallpaper and vanity. :) I think you could probably do something simple with the bath/shower that would build on that but allow a different direction too. Maybe a large pale-tan/taupe tile with the blue as an accent (vertical?) to add color and interest. There's a good chance you'll need to replace the floor tile at the same time, so ideally you could find something sandy for both.

Anyway, as to your specific questions, don't make it more complex than it has to be. Get a tub-shower set that includes a hand sprayer, which is a godsend with shampooing little kids. Then get a shower curtain that brings your color scheme together and maybe adds some whimsey -- easy to update as they get older.

Thank you all for the feedback! I LOVE the Kohler Belleweather tub. Agree maybe a white tile could brighten things up and then do accents that are interesting. I need to think about the floor situation because when we take out the threshold step we will need to patch there...
