I was at a sporting event a few years ago and noticed an umpire spraying Scrubbing Bubbles on his white leather shoes. He said all the umpires do it. It totally works.

In the past I have used white shoe dye on my white shoes - it works better than white shoe polish or paste, as it is fairly opaque.

I used it on some two-toned black and white shoes that I had in the 1980s. They looked sort of like this

but with a pointier toe.

Today I have some Tretorn all white tennis shoes. I prefer to wear all white shoes when playing tennis, although I have not played in a few years.

I once sprayed my white canvas tennies with Scotchguard. After wearing them a short time (20 min?) it felt like my feet were on fire. Bad allergic reaction, so be careful.

I live most of my non flip flop time in white Keds. I now buy the leather Keds.

note: A lesson I learned, Keds are no longer machine washable. I tried, the blue of the lining turned my white shoes blue. I contacted Keds and they said they haven’t been washable for many, many years. They did send me a complimentary pair to replace the ruined ones.

That's good to know Maddielee! I do still have a pair or white keds around here somewhere. I rarely wear tennies other than when exercising, so they don't get too dirty. Good to know about the scrubbing bubbles.

I use Soft Scrub and a brush on cloth running shoes . I have great luck with Bar Keepers Friend on the white sole around the sides. The white rubber always looks brand new.

I had a pair of Eccos that I loved. I could not keep the white sidewall clean. I tried BKF, I tried Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, I tried toothpaste. You name it, I probably tried it. I finally gave them away.

@bbstx I only wear New Balance and it works really well. Must be the difference in the materials.

This blogger suggests Mrs Stewart’s Blueing Liquid. Honestly, I don’t even know what this product is. The 2nd question asks about her cleaning her white Converse sneakers.

I have always just used the Magic Eraser Sponge and has worked just fine.

I have Mrs. Stewart’s Bluing Liquid. I had a pair of white linen pants with an oxidized stain on them. I did everything I knew to do to get the stain out. Finally, I got it faded to barely yellow. Then I mixed up some Mrs. Stewart’s and washed the pants in it (or whatever the Mrs. Stewart’s label said do). Stain was gone - or appeared to be gone. I think Mrs. Stewart’s works on the principle of being an optical brightener, therefore making things look whiter.

If you use it, follow the directions to the letter! You can end up with blue stains if you don’t.

We used it as children to grow salt crystal gardens in fish bowls.

I have never heard of bluing! LOL!!

I did not know that Keds were no longer washable. How disappointing, but I just washed a pair without a problem. I don't wear them often these days, but will keep that in mind before I by another pair.

The ability to keep white shoes white (and I'm assuming canvas here since leather can be polished, dyed or otherwise touched up) is one reason I have considered trying Rothy's sneakers. I wish they had a lighter styling though. With a large foot and a high arch, I like less shoe most often and find full coverage uppers may not fit well, but I digress ....

The other thing I wonder about is based on crafting things I have seen. People are using Mod Podge for fabric on shoes as a glue or a protective coating. I recently bought some for another purpose, as well as 2 other brands to find out how they differed. Odicoat says it gives an oilcloth like finish and Heat n Bond has a liquid vinyl coating that is to be ironed to set. A single coat of Odicoat gives a nice light finish on cotton fabric or you can apply a second coat for more sheen and more protection. Heat n bond is similar -- just slightly heavier. My least favorite is Mod Podge. It is the heaviest of the three and has the most plastic feeling. hey are all washable, but only in cold water or warm and gentle for Odicoat. I have not tried any of them on shoes, but I know others have. I might try a coat on a pair of TOMS.

Another super protector I have seen used is Carbon pro spray, but that has been on leather shoes. I don't know if it can be used on fabric or how it wears. It could have the same skin reaction potential as Scotchguard.

Years ago, we always used Jubilee Kitchen Wax on light colored & patent leather shoes, and there's cleaner made specifically for athletic shoes now - Kiwi brand?

Magic Eraser does work well, but it's an abrasive that can remove the finish. I use one mainly on the plastic outsoles.

Bathroom cleaner can remove finishes too, BTW.

I remember using Kiwi shoe shampoo back when I was in graduate school. It worked well.
