Exterior entry stair or enclosed interior entry stair
Comments (10)Okay, I'm asking forgiveness in advance for opinionated comments: In everyday living, exterior stairs get wet, slippery, cold, icy. And, unless exquisitely designed (to be a statement of elegance), they look tacky. Statements of elegance are quite often inconvenient to live with, although one can bask in the initial admiration of visitors. I know that in some areas, exterior stairs are a... neighborhood tradition; a statement of necessity. And all too often, they look it. I think the architect's foyer is rather big, but oh my, the opportunity to make a decorating statement!! OTOH, I suspect 12x14 may be in proportion to the house. The architect needs to bend his brain so that the top of the staircase does not interfere with your views. I do hope someone has realized that an elevator would be of even greater use, especially if anyone breaks a leg, brings in the groceries or hauls out the trash. And if DW wants a traditional entry, an elevator could certainly take one up to the usual doorway....See MoreMCM ranch --- keep exterior wrought iron columns or replace?
Comments (36)You need to remember you have a black roof and a black roof with brown doesn't work all that well on the exterior. However, I do like your railings on the porch and the fact you've chosen another color that does blend on the shutters and windows. However, I'd go with grey or white for the windows and the wooden area below the windows and paint the shutters black and the front door its own color such as green or blue. No matter what color you use white or grey I'd paint the front door it's own color for certain. Also, you need to paint those rails grey or white to blend with the door and roof. If you do any landscaping in front be certain if you put a blooming plant it's an evergreen (my taste) so it'll stay green year-round and all the blooms match because you have a small area to work with and you don't want a patch quilt look in front of the house during blooming season. Example if you decide to do an evergreen plant winter gem boxwoods would be a great base plant in the back they grow about four feet tall and are very hard and in front of the boxwoods plant something such as small azaleas that aren't deciduous. However, remember the blooms need to all be one color....See MoreHouse exterior: Benjamin Moore Graphite vs Sherwin Williams Iron Ore?
Comments (23)Emily, here it is! I have chosen this photo that was taken in very bright sunlight so that you can see the exact colors! The darker stucco is Sherwin Williams Iron Ore - you see that it does not have any undertone at all! Funnily, the garage door was supposed to be painted in the same color too but it looks bluish here... in reality though, it is not that bluish! LOL! Just for contrast, the light color stucco is SW Dorian Gray. It is like a warm concrete color. The combination with SW Iron Ore is great! I hope this helps....See MoreWhat’s between the brick exterior and plaster wall interior. 100 YO.
Comments (8)while I’d prefer to keep the plaster, it bulges in some areas and creates snag points on the walls and there Are a lot of patches that just weren’t done properly, so replacing it with Sheetrock would allow me to fix it all at once and in terms of the bathroom I’m going to build in, it will also allow me to open the walls to allow the plumbing and electrical to be run faster(and cheaper). The Walls and ceilings all over the house are textured and some rooms have already been converted to Sheetrock and they textured those to match the plaster(poorly). When I did make some holes in the walls for things like new outlets, I didn’t find any paper under the texturing layer, just solid plaster. Seriously, the house has probably been worked on by 5 different contractors and none of them even tried to match the work of the others. The drywall work was sloppy and they used too much joint compound in some areas, none in others. ill try to post some pictures on my Profile under a new project for more details and so you can see what I’m talking about. The house is sitting on a cement foundation. Not block. I just wasn’t sure if cement could be covered and not have it look like I’m trying to hide something. I haven’t seen any code against it in the UBC or in my local city/county codes....See Moremillworkman
