Ceiling Fan... What would you choose?

I'm building a new home and need a strong (yet beautiful fan) for the Great Room (20 ft ceiling)

I can't decide between these 3:

Maverick 88 (monte celo)

Haiku (Big Ass Fan) 84 inch

Minka Wave 64 inch (minkagroup)

I've run into an issue with downrods where you can only get 72" (6 ft). For a high 18-20 ft ceiling, this is a problem, as the fan is still stuck way up above your head. I've called around and nobody does custom rods for their products due to wobble. But a fan super high up stuck in the ceiling looks ugly to me. Also, it's less effective for cooling you off.

What to do, what to do....

My instinct says do 72 " rod with 88 inch Maverick, but I'd love to know what you guys have experienced. Are fans still effective in high ceilings? Do you know another brand? Anything to stay away from?

Another option is to have NO fan in the great room because the high ceilings are naturally cooling, allowing hot air to travel high and cool air to sink. Might be better than looking at a fan disproportionate to the room, in the nose bleeds of the ceiling, which will drive me nuts to look at every day!!

I think in a room like that, the main purpose of a ceiling fan would be to keep the air in the space mixing, so that the ground level doesn't become substantially cooler than the ceiling area. If you need cooling, you probably need central air or a stand fan down at human level.

I have the Minka wave and love it.

Know someone who has a big ass fan and it's also great.

I have the Whisper Warm by Panasonic and love it. I don't know exactly how the electrician did it but the heater switch and the shower light are on the same switch right outside the shower door. The rest of the bathroom switches are next to the door and the exhaust fan part of the Whisper Warm is there on a 30 minute timer switch. 30 minutes is more than enough time for our space. By the way, our vanity light is on a dimmer switch and it's nice to be able to turn it down low for lots of reasons including not waking anyone up in the night. Our bathroom is pretty small and the Whisper Warm heats it up great but I read reviews where people with high ceilings or large bathrooms were not happy with it so I got one that was for a larger area and am thrilled. We pur our towels under it when entering the shower and when we get out they are so warm. We also put it right above where you step out of the shower and it's really nice! Oh and the switches are 1/2 the size that the used to be so 2 things fit in the space that one used to take. Good luck whatever you decide.

please put in the ceiling fan. We live in the Mid Atlantic and when I moved here from the upper plains states I thought I moved to the tropics!!! I also dread visiting the Atlanta relatives any time other than Christmas. My DH wants the AC at 70 or lower and I have to have air movement. Year round. I would keep the window open all winter if my DH allowed. I also have been known to travel with a small fan in my suitcase. Yes really. There are so many different styles of ceiling fans I'm sure you could find one thats not too offensive to your design.

You didn't say how old your house is or what style/period you're interested in-? I had the same dilemma last summer. My husband suggested a ceiling fan for a room in the 1926 addition to our 1890's house, and I wasn't thrilled with the idea at first. I looked online at every dang ceiling fan available on the planet it seemed, and while I saw a few expensive period looking ones that fit my idea of what it should look like, they were way beyond the budget. I really hated just about everything else I saw! But...on a shopping trip to one of the big boxes for something else entirely I happened upon one that was acceptable, and was within our budget. It's not ideal, but it has a bit of a 1930's look to it, at least to my eyes, more so than anything else I looked at. I can live with it, and we made up for it later by buying a lovely vintage light fixture on ebay for a more prominent location in the house, anyway--I can't say I'm unhappy with the way it all turned out. What windows would you choose that complement floor to ceiling glass?

IMO the doors in those spaces were for egeress so now you will need to have windows that can open for egress. I would keep the doors get sealed double paned windows thta BTW will need to be impact glass where ever you replace floor to ceiling glass and then teach the kids to not use them since there will be an alarm on each one.

I have that first fan, (i think its an 86” might be one size smaller) its super quiet and stable in a 3 foot down rod. I have another huge one on my lanai and a smaller one in my private patio. They all are quality so you wont be disappointed. I also think that with such tall ceilings its about air circulation so if its up high, it can still do its job. The longer the downrod, the more chance of vibration or wobbling. Im looking at the fan in me bedroom right now and its perfect. Sturdy and wobble/vibration free.

I would not do a 19' ceiling but now you need a fan large enough to move the air up or down depending on the season and the best is to talk to a good lighting and fan expert I ampretty sure there are ratios to get the best . IMO cathederal ceilings belong in cathederals sine they gobble heating and cooling for n real purpose and sound is awhole other element that most people do not think about and how that high empty space distorts sound.IMO 12' is the absolute highest for a ceiling and IMO 10' is a nice height and addressess the heating, cooling and sound issues.

If you have a balcony on the second floor opening to the great room as shown in the picture then you definitely need a fan. I have a setup like that and the second floor gets very warm - you need to push that air down. We have a Minka Aire fan.
