Color schemes with travertine bathroom
Comments (19)We have travertine in two bathrooms. One has an English wallpaper of cream background printed with green scrolls and squirrels and gilt acorns... with this one we use all white towels and the cabinetry is white. The other bathroom has a yellow and red chinoiserie toile wallpaper, a painted vanity (dark taupe) and red towels. Both look great---and that is by way of explaining that you can do almost anything you want to with traverine.. it lends itself to a variety of styles and colors....See MoreWarm versus cool decor - your experience?
Comments (27)My LR & foyer were painted in sage & soft blue that were wonderful in summer but made the house feel dismal & chilly in winter. Because we spend more time in cold, often gray weather here, I changed the colors to warm autumnals. While those colors are a little stifling in August (remedy = bring in cooling cobalt blue accessories) , they're great the rest of the year. I haven't had winter downers since painting my LR orange. It's so cheery & welcoming. It also helped to put in larger windows. The abundant winter light makes the new room colors glow. We kind of miss our summery house, but to have a home that makes fall, winter, & early spring enjoyable is worth it. My #1 DS is mildly autistic and has hypersensitivities, primarily smell & touch. But evidently color affects him strongly too. When we moved to the northeast, I was worried about his adjustment (disastrous --another story). I gave him the bedroom with cross lighting, and let him pick out a room color, hoping to mitigate any adolescent depressions. He asked for bright yellow walls. I made a nice room for him: happy face yellow walls, a sophisticated oriental rug with navy & deep red, cherry furniture & off-white matelasse bedding. It was colorful and upbeat without being childish. Well, he hardly was ever in that room. "It's too 'sharp', " he said & moved into our bland basement: light brown "pecan" paneling and oatmeal Berber carpet, blah muddy colored furniture, fluorescent light (it's consistent!). And that's the way he likes it. It's soothing to him. I have since repainted his bedroom a soft gray blue, and he's been using the room a bit, now that it's no longer "sharp"....See MoreRadiant floor heating - want warm floors, cool room
Comments (5)Yes you can do them both. Your problem right now is how the radiant floor is controlled that causes the temperature to overshoot the set point. Your situation requires a thermostat with PID (Proportional, Integral, derivative) capabilities that self tune to your set points and learns to adjust the run time of your radiant system until it finds the perfect setting. These aren't cheap and aren't the Nest or ecobee types. They're made for radiant floors because of the big lag causing temperatures to overshoot and contain microprocessors and some also sense outside temperatures to better control the system. Here is a link with a good selection to pick from but picking the cheapest isn't the best, you get what you pay for. radiant floor thermostats. If the radiant floor heating system is hydronic you can also adjust the water temperature entering the loops to reduce to overshoot with the mixing valve that mixes hot supply water with return water from the floor. This will help some but won't be nearly as effective as a proper thermostat. I almost forgot, No you can't have 80 degree floors but a cool air temperature in the basement without removing the heat in the air, it is thermodynamically impossible without modifications to the basement. Without opening a window you would need an Air conditioner to remove the heat to the outside (waste) or transfer the heat in the air to the upstairs. A few ceiling vents to the upstairs with fans could work, or a entire duct system for a heat exchanger would work. Either way the room temperature will eventually equal the floor temperature if there is no heat loss in the room. Balancing the heat gain to the heat loss is the only way, and this is what the right thermostat will do but you many not have 80 degree floors....See MoreNeed quick decision on paint color for beige tile bathroom
