Vanity width for powder room
Comments (13)It's hard to tell from your photo, but was the previous countertop marble or cultured marble? Do they expect you to reuse the old top? My first thought was the same as Chispa's. Why should you have to be 'settling'? In fact, why should you be doing the legwork anyways? If the previous vanity was a custom-made one, then that's what they should be replacing it with. Is the condo itself liable and not an insurance co? Is this why there are the cost issues? I realize that any 'upgrades' would have to borne by you, but wouldn't that be better than 'settling'? Have been going through this with my son whose kitchen was flooded LAST October... looks like it may finally get finished within the next couple of weeks! Good luck, I personally would hate to lose so much storage, a 51" vanity with two banks of drawers on each side of the sink base can hold a fair amount of stuff!...See MoreCat Litter Box
Comments (48)We have a litter box called Litter Robot. Best automatic litter box I have ever seen. We also used to have a Litter Maid, the kind with the rake. In theory that is a good idea, but the rake would get all gunked up, the depository that it raked into wasn't big enough so it would get full too quickly and be a huge mess, and the little containers it deposited into were expensive. It finally broke, thank goodness. The Litter Robot is wicked expensive. But it works great. The depository is big and you can use regular small trash bags in it (like 4 or 8 gal that you buy a roll of 100 for $4 from walmart) or you can use plastic bags from grocery store that you carry groceries home in. The litter is always clean. To 'clean' the box, you just pull out the bag of refuse, tie it off and throw it out. We only have one cat so it takes a while to fill up. You have to use a high quality clumping litter, some litters do not clump hard and stay mushy, these would not work as well in it as they could leave wet residue stuck on the inside. They have a 90-day money back guarantee, an excellent warranty and will cover the warranty even if you are not the original owner (if you buy a used one). They do sometimes have refurbished units and also you can sometimes find them on Craigslist or eBay. You have to plug it into an electrical outlet. It is kind of large and looks like the Death Star. For our new house, we will have it in a pre-planned area in the laundry room. For now, we have it in a spare bathroom. I don't think you would need multiple boxes with the LR, as it is always clean. Not sure though ? Here is a link that might be useful: http://www.litter-robot.com/...See MoreHelp making laundry/powder vanity useful and attractive.
Comments (14)The beadboard is a nice choice for the cabin aesthetic. I’m not at all afraid of color, but the Juniper is a bold choice, and the backs of the doors are black, so keep a light hand elsewhere. Love linoleum! Perfect choice here. What color are you thinking? And glad you’ll be doing it in sheets. Make sure they seal the seams well. I like faucet #2 and I’m not worried about it being too big (well see below for that concern.) How big are the small dogs? I’d like you to go see a sink and faucet of that size and make sure that will work. And about the sink, I’m sure you’ve considered this, but just in case: what about a big sink centered on the window, then keep the pedestal in the WC? Or put in a smaller vanity that won’t jam up the space. I can’t see how big that room is, but I’m just thinking the vanity you propose isn’t going to give you quite enough room for buckets and dogs. A true “utility” sink won’t fit in a 24 x 36 countertop. You could get a decent size kitchen sink in that, but it’d be tight, and you’d lose counter space. What I’m really thinking is: no way can you wash a slippery dog in there without splashing all over the place. And where do you put the dog shampoo? “No” to the banjo counter. You’ll thank me later ;-) Corian is fine. Laminate would probably work too. If you don’t do a sink in the laundry room, wood counters would be just fine too. The white Corian might be a little too cold—just what you’re trying to avoid with the white stone. But if you have experience with Corian and you like it, go with that. Looks like you have padded out the uppers, or are using 24” cabinets up there? Good call, since your countertop will need to be about 30” deep. If it were me, (and bear in mind that I am 6’ tall,) I’d ditch the corner cabinet, make the counter and cabinets along the window wall about 28-30”, and use what sliver of space is left for a slot that you can put a fold-up drying rack in. Sink or no sink, I think that will give you a better folding surface. And you could also keep a piece of counter material cut out to cover the sink in that slot, so you could have an uninterrupted folding surface when you don’t need to use the big sink. Just my 2 cents. Looks like it’ll be really cute and functional. So glad you like the Electrolux!...See MoreCat litter box - what room?
Comments (26)Good ideas. Putting my thoughts here so I can refer back to it once we know where the garage and outside trashcan location will be too in relation to rooms. We use liners in the litter box to make it easier to change. Mudroom will be close no matter what so the most obvious choice except for the potential smell when entering (although that requires perfect timing by all parties) and having a sink there might just be a good thing anyways. We use a low tracking litter, but there is still always a little bit around the box area even after they walk on the matt. They use a closed box. I want to change from having one box to two boxes even though we don't have any issues now so need a little more space. If I did go for the garage - it would have to be in an enclosed space the kitties couldn't get out of as they are indoor only kitties and would be eaten by something if they got out on our property, so need to be careful there. I'm also afraid they'd be scared by having it there due to noise if we came home while they were busy etc. We will have a pool bath so it could or could not end up near the mudroom. If it did I guess it could be an option, but I personally am not a fan of it just in case a guest needs to go and kitty also needs to go at the same time. I'm thinking guests might find it a bit awkward sharing the space and we have one kitty who is a bit of a "scarity" cat who wouldn't dare go then. Laundry seems like a good option still, besides the littler part, but will depend on location. I'm torn and told architect I wanted it near the mudroom as it is easy to strip out of dirty clothes coming inside and throw in washer, but I also want it somewhat near the bedrooms. Guess we'll see. Kitty food and water will be in the laundry. Mudroom still makes the most sense from an efficiency stand point. Already clean gravel/mud from there and it will be close to trash can. If we add a sink then it would work and also put the litter box more hidden to keep smells a bit more contained (smells generally are short lived thankfully)....See MoreMDLN
