Help with paint color for 2 story foyer

I currently have a painter working in the house and the color that I thought I was going to love (BM Edgecombe Gray).... I don't. I realize now after putting samples on the walls that Edgecombe and other Gray neutrals, do not go too well with my surroundings and lighting. I need to come up with a color for my 2 story foyer. I currently have tile (1999) in entry hall and throughout kitchen. Surrounding rooms are natural oak hardwood. I hope one day to change the flooring to match my dark steps, but not sure when that will happen. I'm afraid the peach/pink tone in the tile could also be problematic. All my furniture is dark wood. I'm looking for of a modern "biege" or "taupe" color. I've sampled BM Edgecombe, Revere pewter. Smokey taupe and Valspur Foggy mirror. They all look too Gray in my lighting. I like Pashmina, but afraid too dark. I'd appreciate your tips and suggestions..

For something a bit warmer you can try BM Grant Beige, but the pink/peach tones are going to dictate what color you end up with.

Thank you for the nice comments. : ) It is so rich and warm--I am loving it. I only wish I wasn't such a perfectionist--I notice the flaws too. But I know that most anyone who walks in won't be looking for them/at them. I should put out a public "thank you" to members of this board for suggesting Carrington Beige. I was looking at something even warmer, and it was pointed out to me (correctly so!) that it wouldn't work with my runner and upstairs hall carpet. I had worried the Carrington would look more grey, and it certainly doesn't! Lynn, I'm thinking something warm and beige/gold for the dining room, too. I could go green, but I wonder if it might be too dark against the moss green end chairs. I'm open to all suggestions--as long as they will look good with Carrington Beige. : ) The small living room (in back of the dining room) has the same color scheme, though more transitional furniture. I don't know much about the wood. This was not a custom home. We bought it 95% finished. The floors are oak. I don't know any more than that. I'm sorry! The little boy is my 4 1/2 year-old, Joshua. : ) He has a 7 year-old older brother named Jack. : )

Funcolors thank you for your reply. After reading many of your posts here I'm happy to get your knowledgeable advice. :) I've tried out 9 different paint samples and looked at probably 100 tan/beiges before finding Sierra Hills so glad to hear my choice is a good one. :) Seirra Hills looks close to SW Nomadic Desert to me on paint chip which is one up from Latte. I've thought about getting sample of it. What would you say would be different in these two colors? We are painting the upstairs hallway the same color. What should we do about the hallway ceiling? I don't want it to be too dark going down the long hallway. Should I leave it the off white or paint it a shade or two lighter then the foyer. We had changed the original house plans to add a office downstairs and bedroom upstairs so this is how the foyer struture ended up. There is a wide ledge/shelf under window then the front door below. The walls have needed painting for a long time so I'm excited to get it done soon. Nancy

Hi there! I’m in a similar situation, except that our 2 story foyer faces north and doesn’t get much light. The floors are a white oak stained walnut. The adjacent north facing family room will be painted BM stonington gray (to complement the south facing dining room, which will be painted BM Newburyport Blue). I was planning on painting the foyer and upstairs hallway BM Wickham Gray. But after reading several articles about northern exposure, I’m second guessing the Wicham Gray. Trying to keep all the light in, and not darken the entry. Any suggestions / thoughts for the 2 story foyer??

Yes, to your first question. You can see the lower TV room ceiling here and how it opens to the foyer. That walkway measures 47" width ( including future baseboard.) I thought a post against that wall would balance the newel on the other side and allow for a "separation" between spaces? I don't know what the color should do in this area? My husband wants the darker brown for the TV room. Also, our color "cocoa" drives me crazy- it goes pinky (flesh beige) with an east facing window light-(the picture below was taken this morning) and goes blue(brown) and relaxed in the evening with sconce/lamp light. I love the color in the evening. Most mornings, I think I need to repaint! Thanks for your interest.

Forst there is no way to choose a whole house wall color from those little patches painted over yellow before choosing wall color makes suare all your lighting is the same everywhere I like LED 4000K but some like LED 3500 K just pick one and use it everywhere. Testing colors is done best with samples of each color up to 3 then poster boards painted with 2 coats and moved arounf from room to room until you find the one that works everywhere.Since the tile is driving the choices find colors that work with it and also your whites are not the same . I think before moving forward you give the painter a few days off until you have chosen the color .This is my go to for a nice neutral not taupe, gray or beige I often cut it up to 25% for just a hint of color.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting thank you for your tips. I now realize that I am not seeing the sample colors properly. I plan on getting the boards. I still think the 1st 3 colors I picked are going to be too gray. I'm looking for warm. neutral , different...and some depth. Not sure what you mean by my "whites" are not the same? Are you referring to the doors/trim? If so.. they have not been painted yet to match the trim on stiarway.... they will all be the same white. I will check our gray wisp, but again... is it too Gray? Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

We have Behr Creamy Mushroom in our 2 story entry that opens into our living room with a lot of natural light. Naturally, it reads darker in the entry, so a lighter version might work better for you if you don't have a lot of light. . Originally painted when we had beige LR carpet and marble tile in the entry with a pink/peach cast. It's still a nice color with replacement hickory floors. I'm sure you could match the color if you prefer Benjamin Moore. Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige is similar; both are lighter than BM Pashmina.
