Vinyl wallpaper??? Should I paint it or just cover it up?
Comments (7)Research wallpaper removal...there are a lot of posts online where people share their techniques to minimize drywall damage. A steamer might also make the job easier and minimize wall damage. The painter did not want to do this because it is a PITA job...of course when she showed you...it caused damage; it sounds as if she did nothing to mitigate it so it became a job she did not have to do. Removal and repair will be tedious, somewhat messy, but totally doable for someone who researches. Also research drywall repair techniques after removal of wallpaper. Once the wallpaper and paste is off, buy a small piece of drywall; replicate the damage you see on your walls, and practice repairs with drywall compound, types of trowels or blades for the kind of damage, sandpaper/sanding blocks/sponges, and spray texture (recommend for ease of use) if your walls have any kind of texture to them. Remember building up thin layers of compound (dry each layer before you add another) instead of one thick layer works best for repairing any deep damage. You can do this if you research and practice. I taught myself after waiting years for my husband to find someone to repair the walls of our large de-papered family room. I got fed up with his procrastination again and just started...no one can tell what was de-papered/repaired and what wasn't. Patience, diligence, and persnicketiness are important....See MoreFramed wallpaper art ?
Comments (51)About colour - your rooms are beautiful and you have done a great job of presenting a cohesive and interesting space. Not everyone needs or wants colour. If you don't miss it or need it then don't put it in because someone tells you that it needs it. We redid our house a few years ago and I fell into the "Neutral rooms and bring interest into the room through texture" trap and I hated both the living room and especially the kitchen. I have spent the last 5 years bringing colour back into the house because I do need colour, not a lot, but some and I recognize that. I like the art work but the teal pillows are too eye-jarring. If you like the canvas art then try pillows in the soft pink (?) found in the art....See MoreHelp me pick a wallpaper for my powder room!
Comments (45)I will disagree with Jan. Doing one wall in paper can turn out nicely and allow for a busier paper than would otherwise be comfortable, especially in a small space. I have hung wallpaper in many rooms myself including those I've pasted and those that were prepasted, but I've never done peel and stick. I'm not sure how it would work as, part of hanging paper, is being able to slide it so that you can get the seams to line up perfectly so they don't show. With it sticking on contact, I would think that would make it much harder. If you do decide to paper yourself, make sure you book the paper (folding each strip glue side to glue side and letting it rest). Also I've found that the fuzzy part of a paint roller, not in the handle, is a great smoothing tool...it allows you to apply enough pressure without scratching the paper at all. And absolutely prep the walls before hand or you will hate yourself when you decide to remove it....See MorePeel and Stick Wallpaper OVER existing Wallpaper?
Comments (18)Thanks all. I am a Realtor. and have been for 15 years.....so I do understand the importance of what's really critical and, as this is my mother's home (she passed away in November) and I'll be listing it, I'm taking extremely good care of the systems, yard, appliances, etc. I'm willing to invest more than the average "flipper or prepper". The comps are extremely good in the area so I'm willing to go over and above to maximize the sale. I'm really just curious if anyone has every used the peel and stick over exisiting wallpaper. I had no intention of paining over the paper. - that's a shortcut I'd never do, especially on my own property and If i paint, I'd remove the paper, have the drywall prepped appropriately and then paint. I just wanted some insght into the peel and stick and see if it was worth a shot! Thanks all!...See Morepartim
