Copper sink - will I be happy with a 16-gauge after having a 14-gauge?

I loved our 14-gauge copper farm sink and am planning in our new kitchen another copper farm sink. i notice most on the market are 16-gauge. Will i be happy with a 16-gauge? Pros and cons? Thank you!

I have copper sinks and the ccompany I bought my kitchen sink still sells 14 gauge sinks.

From what I read when I researched copper is softer than stainless steel so there might be issues in terms of dents. Evidently the higher guage sinks can produce more noise as well which is why some are insulated with foam for noise control.

At any rate my kitchen sink came from Havens Metals. Coppersinksonline is also supposed to sell quality sinks and sells 14 gauge.

The copper sink in my bathroom came from Premiere Copper and they appear to sell 16 gauge sinks but they are relatively inexpensive and I was less concerned about quality in my powder room. They are a reliable company though as I used them for my custom copper kitchen hood as well as copper tiles and a custom copper medallion for my backsplash.

ETA - I just checked Premiere Copper and their kitchen sinks are also 14 gauge. It might be that their bathroom sinks are 14 gauge because they don't have the same kind of use with pots and pans. When I was researching sinks, their prices were quite a bit lower than some others so you might check pricing on their sinks.

16 is commonly used in zero and half radius sinks because the thicker steel is needed when the shapes are not stamped out. Either is wonderful providing the grade of the steel itself is high quality. The percentage of nickel and chromium determines corrosion resistance. The higher the percentage, the better the grade of stainless. 304 grade stainless is comprised of 18% chrome and 10% nickel. Look for "Certified" 304 Stainless Steel.

Thanks so much for your responses. Buehl: Yes, delivery of the Ticor 815 will be hung up for months because of "problems with the mold", according Galaxy Tool Supply. So the sinks noted in my original post are what's left for me because of the center drain issue. My builder needs extra room at the back of the cabinet to bring up new water and waste lines into an island where they have not existed. So a rear drain plus a garbage disposal would cramp the plumbing too much. We live in Monterey, CA, where we have been under tight water restrictions for years. The local water management district has specific dimensions that must be adhered to for a "second sink". FYI: I just had to pay them $400 in fees for the privilege of installing the second sink, and we had to sign a deed restriction promising that we--and every owner after us--would not revert back to a bigger sink. Alku05: Thanks for your note. That makes me feel better about the thinner material in the Oliveri sink. I think Consumer Reports also went on record saying that 20-gauge sinks were perfectly adequate.

Are you sure about the 10 lbs? I cannot imagine how the difference between a 16 gauge sink and an 18 gauge sink (of the same size) could create a 10 lb. difference. BTW, my sink is 14 gauge, and the installer did not complain that it was heavy, and there's never been a problem with it. Also, you should see all the people on this Forum with marble countertops and either fireclay or enameled cast iron sinks. Those sinks weigh several times more than your 16-gauge stainless sink.

Is your ticor sink the 405? Can't find it anywhere. Galaxy tools have them backordered till early Dec "IF" they arrive, could be held up in customs so he says. I am scared to take the chance and my fabricator really wants to get going. My other choices are the Kohler 3099 D sink which is quite pricey (anyone have one installed?) or an off brand from Builders spec that is basically the same size as the Ticor except overall width is a little smaller. It is from Italy and the salesgal online says people rave about the sink. Decisions, decisions............. If anyone knows of an available Ricor 405 please let me know, doesn't look like overstock has the right one.
