Site built and sprayed junk that will last a couple of years before falling apart is very common in TX. Custom is no synonym for quality.

We bought a house last year that was built in the 80's and the the kitchen was remodeled around 20 years ago. Signature custom cabinetry (high end) rustic cherry, all high end appliances. No soft close. Drawers aren't even full extension. The crown molding is not flush to the ceiling. I never even noticed until seeing this post.

On the other hand, our beach house kitchen has Brookhaven cabinets but the crown molding is our own and painted to match. It's flush (I'm sure with the help of caulk). The doors are MDF.

The house we sold last year had a 10 year old kitchen built by artisans in Maine, Kennebec Company, quarter sawn white oak. The doors are not soft close but the crown molding was multi piece so perfectly flush.

I guess this is a long way of saying that non flush molding, painted MDF doors and no soft close hinges aren't all that unusual. I don't see it as a deal breaker and I doubt you'll get them to do anything about it in this hot market.

The ceiling gaps can be filled and touched up. It's not a great installation but it's not terrible. Ceilings are rarely flat so they always need some fudging.

Thanks for the replies, one of the cabinet doors is completely warped on the vertical open end at the top, so i confirmed with the seller what material the cabinets were so i could order a new one. (mdf and plywood). I’ll probably add soft close drawer rails and hinges myself, cant can’t be the difficult.

soft close drawers, would not even be a priority for me. I have lived a whole lot of years, and never had them. My drawers work fine, and I never shove them so hard, they bounce back. The crown moulding needs a skilled person to caulk it properly. Your paint may not match on the new door you order, just so you are aware.

Crown mold doesn't bend to an undulating ceiling. Mud the ceiling down or caulk.

Is this a brand new house? If so, the builder usually lists the finishes. Did they claim to be installing solid wood cabinets? If this a completed home you made an offer on after viewing, I don’t know what you expect to happen. You should have known what you were buying

The answer to your question is: it depends. Ceilings are rarely flat and how the crown gets installed depends on how much movement there is in the ceiling and the distance between the crown and other horizontal planes on the cabinets.

MDF is fine for kitchen cabinets and it certainly isn't junk. Solid wood panels are junk. "All wood" (plywood) cabinets are often a marketing ploy, it is a way to get you to pay $5,000 for a $500 upgrade. Most MDF used on cabinets is going to be MR10 which will handle water better than plywood, is better for coatings, etc.

You have overlay cabinets, so hinges are installed into the face frame which are wood. So the fact that boxes are mdf, if they are, will not matter.

Caulk!

Molding is supposed to meet the ceiling but usually needs a line of caulk because lines are never straight and true.

Where is this house? Is there a 2nd floor above or is that the attic above? Have you ever heard of truss uplift?

If you have an engineered truss roof, the top plate of the trusses gets cold in the winter and shrinks, while the bottom plate(attached to your sheet rock) is buried in insulation and remains warm. This means the bottom plate arches up about 1/8" or more in the middle of the span. That crown may have been touching the ceiling when they built it, but now in the winter the ceiling picked up.

Anyway, the proper way to sheet rock a ceiling with a truss roof is to stand screws back 16" from any wall so that the drywall can flex down. However, the dry wall crew likely can't predict where your cabinets were going to be.

As a side note: the spray job on your cabinets is garbage.
