Educational garden event in West End this Saturday
Comments (1)This was an absolutely fantastic event, and a BIG thank-you to Westender for organizing things. Although this event was in the West End and about the West End, people from all over the city (and from Alabama!!) came to hear people speak with enthusiasm about urban agriculture. This was a group of inspired individuals who see freedom in a seed!...See MoreHelp! Expectations betwn grower and chef for special event dinner
Comments (4)I had a similar thing happen (at least we weren't hosting it). Local Historical Society wanted me to supply jams, jellies, pickles, etc. for Tavern Night (mid-19th century), I helped plan the menu and bought 10 lbs of pork roast (just a taste for 50 people) and then we got hit with a freak snowstorm, everyone lost power for days (we kept the freezer running with a generator) and the event was canceled. All the pickles were in the fridge, I didn't can them since the event was only a week or so away from when I was harvesting my peppers. We ate a LOT of pickled peppers for a while (and pork roast more than a few times over the winter). Just got notice they've rescheduled for June 8. I still have the jams and jellies, but have market so said I can't help that night (though I did help them revise the menu to a more seasonally-appropriate one), they'll have to pick up the jars earlier. At least they said they'd put out placecards with the flavors (and ingredients in case of allergy) when they dish them out (if I make up the cards, and I'll make sure I put my farm name on them), and I can stop by after market. Who knows, maybe I can sell some more out of the back of my truck LOL! But at least you didn't get stuck with a lot of perishable produce....See MoreWhat's for dinner........Saturday edition
Comments (9)Gosh, everyone's dinner sounds so good! I swear that I'm going to get a slow cooker; I must be one of the few that don't. I'm looking forward to those cool autumn evenings. I sort of miss our little outdoor chiminea....it was enjoyable to sit around a fire and chat over drinks. Jasdip, my eyes are FABULOUS! My vision gets sharper and brighter every day. I asked Robert this evening if he noticed that the TV reception had improved and he just laughed at me. I simply cannot believe that I have this vision out of my own eyes. My doctor somehow managed to finess my new lenses so that I feel like I have almost infinite far vision but still can see well enough close up that I've only needed readers for very small print. I can put on my makeup, read most things without my new little readers. I will donate all of my eye glasses next week. Pretty amazing. I had him, his technician, and myself dabbing our eyes last week at a checkup visit after my second surgery. I made him stop what he was going, I took his hand in mine, leaned close to him and told him how much my new vision meant to me, someone who had really been so burdened by terrible vision since I was a little, tiny girl. I wanted him to know that my life was changed....See MoreWhat's for dinner, Saturday
Comments (17)Dawn, our WA coast fishery is just beginning. In fact, these were crab from a tribal boat, they start earlier. Raven, 21 crab, kicking and running ;0) Our cooking pot holds 8 so it took a couple of hours from starting the water heating (over gas outside, snowing) to cleaned up. And he is the nicest friend, for so many years now. I always introduce him as the closest to a knight on a white horse I will ever have, he has a boom truck that he handles so skillfully I think he could pick up an egg. In 2007, our entire community was without power, storm damage on almost every block, I had an 100' pine laying on my new roof where the chimney had been and we'd lost a friend to the storm. Out of no where came my knight Harvey with his boom truck to lift the tree when I'm sure there were people who needed him more than I did. It's so nice to hear from you comfortable in your house again ;0)...See MoreJinx
