Remove fixtures to wallpaper bathroom?

Hi all, could use some advice from those who have been there before. Our tiny powder room needs re-wallpapering and our contractors have recommended removing all the fixtures (including vanity and toilet) to do so. They say they can't guarantee quality if the fixtures are left in place.

This sounds like a huge pain and will extend the job by 1-2 days! Can anyone comment on whether it's truly necessary in order to have a high-quality finished product?

They want you to remove the toilet so they can get to the area behind it easily. It's not too difficult to remove a toilet, although if you don't have the knowledge in house you will have to pay someone to do it. They could wallpaper up to a fixed vanity, but without seeing a picture of the room I don't know whether yours is presenting some sort of specific issue. That would mean that if you ever change the vanity you would have to re-wallpaper, but I assume you've already thought about that and it's not an issue. If you have a light fixture over the vanity (or sconces) that will have to come off also.

I have wallpapered a few bathrooms and never removed vanity or toilet. It is more tedious with more precision measuring/cutting/matching, which opens the door for small errors (which I was always able to resolve, but I’m not a perfectionist). I assume they don’t want you to be unhappy and perhaps want something redone, so giving you the heads up.

I'm not clear if you've replaced the vanities, which do need replacing if you're going to the expense of new granite, sink, and faucet. I don't see why you'd want to make those permanent, expensive changes based around a design scheme of outdated peach wallpaper.

Hi Sochi, I have been reading your comments over the wallpaper for over a month and am almost ready to pull the trigger! I have been in touch with W&D in Italy and also a local retailer here in the states (I'm in Houston). My builder has been pushing back on this whole idea from the beginning (it's out of his comfort zone and believes I should just put a beautiful tile in the shower), and really wants nothing to do with the project - yes, this upsets me. He is insistent that we install tile on the wall first, which I know is fine, but an added cost. I'm going to talk with his wallpaper installer about it, and may have to go with a completely different installer (hopefully referred by the store I'm purchasing the paper from). Anyways, I don't want you to rehash everything you've already written, but is there any advice you can give me? I see that it's still holding up fine, which is great news. Did your contractor have any other feedback of comments about prep or install? Do you wish you had gone with tile? I just love the unique look and how it creates an art scene on the wall! I love wallpaper and have it in most of the rooms in my house. Some of it has been there for decades and is still in excellent condition. Having said this, I have told my children that when they haul me out of here, dead or alive, to remove all the wallpaper before putting the house up for sale. People are terrified of removing wallpaper - think it will destroy the walls (if drywall and not properly primed, it might!), or will cost a fortune to remove. So I told them to only leave the wallpaper in two bathrooms - both are done in a Farrow & Ball strie paper and they make the two baths. As to wallpaper and using it in a bath or kitchen. One is no longer limited to "kitchen/bath vinyl wallpaper. I chose a gorgeous french documentary paper for my kitchen when we were moving here in 1984. I was worried about using it as a backsplash in my kitchen (which is what one did in those days), and a rep in the Brunschwig & Fils showroom in LA, told me to just send it to ResistFlame in Cincinnati. They would coat it with vinyl and I'd be good to go. I did this and have done it many times since. One has a choice of matte finish (my choice) or glossy, and it can be single/double/triple coated depending on the wear/tear one expects it to have to endure. I've always done single coating and that has been fine. It is totally wipeable/scrubable with a Dobie pad. The company is so easy to work with - I usually just have the paper drop-shipped directly to them. They coat the paper and then ship it to me. It's really quite reasonably priced.

If floor has drama, with charcoal or pattern of 2 colors, you don't need this, but here it is. Do you have a photo by any chance? It's hard to say withut seeing it. If it's small it could be extremely difficult to get into some spots.

I can't speak to the toilet removal but I wallpapered my bathroom as one of the last things I did in my remodel and there was no need to remove the vanity. The paper was all templated so that it went together seamlessly - pun intended.

My toilet was also in place but the lower part of the room was tiled and so there wasn't much area around the toilet to deal with. I would imagine that the hoses behind a toilet would be tricky to work around. On the other hand removing and reseating a toilet is very simple - I had that done beause the wax seal needed to be repaired. Toilets are routinely installed DIY by homeowners. It is somewhat of a basic homeowner skill like changing a faucet or even installing a garbage disposal.

I wallpapered a half bath in my my parent's house, many years ago. The wallpaper is still there and should be redone but next time I will tile or install beadboard on the lower part of the wall first. I know it is a powder room but tile is much easier to clean.

"Our tiny powder room..." tiny is up to interpretation. Is that 3 x 5 or 5 x 7 or??? Tiny powder room might mean one needs to be a contortionist to get around the fixtures :)
