Kolbe has a traditional double hung called Old World classic if you want to go with that traditional route by a national manufacturer. They also have the sterling double hung which looks more traditional but also more modern features. Some times in your case a local manufacturer might be more suited for that traditional and custom build. vic, if you are unable to locate one of the brands that are universally well regarded by pros, my best recommendation would be to take a close look at performance ratings. You can look at window performance the same way you look at mileage and horsepower when buying a car. U factor and air leakage are two big ones... There is a little complexity when it comes SHGC and others as the optimum numbers can vary based on climate, but the these ratings are a great guide either way.

millworkman, that is not helpful for us. We are not rich and will never afford the best windows. If Simonton is no good, then what can you recommend if we are on a tight budget? We don't want to spend more than $400 a window. I understand you get what you pay for, but also, if you don't pay for anything, you are still left with old poorly functioning crap anyways which is what we've got.
